The Code of the West...Treat Everyone the Same....

By
Real Estate Agent with Aubrey and Associates Realty

This is a post that definitely applies in our lives.  We need to treat everyone we come in contact with the same way, fairly.  That is right, everyone from our most cherished loved ones to the people who we despise need to be treated the same way.  Why?  It makes each of us a better person when we do this.  I will admit, this is another area in my life where I struggle to practice what I am preaching.  I try, buy Darcy tells me my body language gives me away when I am around people who, lets just say rub me the wrong way.

It is something that I am working on, and have been for quite a while.  I can remember my mother telling me the best way to get back and someone who wronged me was to "kill them with kindness".  The Bible teaches us that we "must turn the other cheek".  Still another proverb tells us "the best revenge is a life well lived."  This concept isn't something necessarily comes out of the Old West, rather something that is found in all of the religions that I have studied.

Why do we need to treat everyone the same way?  It is in our best interests both as human beings and as business people!  This World is crying ou for Human Compassion, and a great place to start is by treating everyone the way that we treat the people who we love!  In this lifetime we may never know what caused this person or that person to act the way that they do.  What we do know is that treating them with respect, dignity and showing that you can look past their deedsk, words and actions eventually they will come around.  If they don't come around, so what!  You're a better person for your effort!

How does this apply in business?  I am reminded of a quote by former NFL quarterback, Jim McMahon, "I don't have to like them, but if they can get open and can catch the ball, you can bet I am going to throw it to them".  That is how we should look at people, we don't know where our business sources may come from, so why not attempt to work with them.  I know that you're saying, but there are people who are impossible to work with.  I agree, to me these are the ones that either can't get open, nor can they catch the ball.  These are the people who after treating them well, they still are impossible, so you refer them to someone who may mesh better with them.

This is most likely my last post in this series, unless I think of something outside of my original list.  I do hope that you have enjoyed this series.  I also hope that this series has caused someone other than myself to stop and think about the things that you can do a better job of in their lives.

I absolutely believe in treating everyone the same.  But, I must admit there is a line in one of my favorite Patrick Swayze movies, "Road House," which I also sometimes adhere to.  It's "Be nice, until it's time to not be nice!"  I'm prejudiced against bad behavior. However, I still continue trying to be nice!  The great thing about this business, is even our worst "boss" (client) lasts only as long as the escrow period:-)

Tony and Darcy, you're so right - treat everyone the same - definitely the best policy.  BTW, my middle granddaughter is skiing in your area this week and has fallen in love with your beautiful Utah area.  From your pictures, I can certainly see why.

Tony and Darcy- you have written about something so very basic and yet often forgotten in our world today.  You never know what kind of day that person has had or what their background was.  I try to treat people as they treat me, and in some cases a little better!!  I'm going back to read the rest of your series.

Basic message is to be nice. It doesn't mean that you have to be taken advantage of, it just means that you expect to be treated fairly and do so to others.

Tony & Darcy:  You have shared much wisdom with us in your post.  It is always so easy to be nice to folks who are nice to us.  Being nice to those who have hurt us in the past is one of the things I have the most problems with.

Myrl:  It's funny you should mention the movie Road House with Patrick Swayze.  I just really love that movie.  I've watched it several times.  Yes... "Be nice, until it's time to not be nice."

After a while, I really started to dislike the nasty lead character... named Brad Wesley in the movie, and played by Ben Gazarra.  Then just a few months ago I read Mr Gazarra passed away... and I felt sad.  It's funny how these characters can come so close to being real with us.

Myrl, Thanks for stopping by, I too like the movie Road House.  I thought about that line while I was writing this post, but then I thought in our business it is better to take the high road or to refer them to someone else.

Juli, Thanks for stopping by!  Where did your granddaughter go skiing?  There are some really beautiful ski resorts in Utah.

Joshua, Thank you for stopping by!  We do appreciate you and your comments!

Kathy, Thank you!

Dorie, Thank you!  We hope that you too enjoyed a blessed and happy Easter!

Kevin, That does get old, doesn't it?  Thanks for the comments!

Charita, Thank you!

Janis, Thank you!  That is exactly what we were trying to say.

Karen Anne, Thank you!

Howdy and evening Tony and Darcy

Tony and Darcy my friends, your Mom sure was right about killing folks with kindness is the best way to get back at. Folks which do others wronged sure don't know how to handle someone being kind to them, it flat out takes the sail out of them.

This here sure is an outstanding blog post for folks to visit and enjoy reading!

Have a good one
