Little Boy wanders off on the Beach, Mom finds Him - Happy Ending!

By

This little boy made a friend on Cape Canaveral Beach who said he saw a big hole someone had dug in the sand so they went to investigate. His Mom only took her eyes off him for a few seconds and then PANIC! Everyone including the lifegaurds rallied to find him in about 10 minutes. Pictured with their backs to the camera are my Daughter and Granddaughter who helped. They have a system of hand signals and the kids know where they should be - in sight at all times. That's hard to accomplish with the younger ones so constant vigilance is the only answer. What happened here could happen to any Mom on any given day. Who said parenting was easy? :-) All's well that ends well! Here's a great article: How to Teach Your Kids Beach Safety.

Whew. That could have ended so different. I've never seen a lifeguard wear a scarf like that either. Must not have wanted his ears and/or nose to burn.

Debi - You are so right. Predators seem to crawl out of the woodwork these days.

John, Wow, that is a great story!  I do like it when stories end like that, too many don't!  Have a great afternoon!

When a kid wanders off at the beach it can be frightening when you can't locate them right away.  When my kids were at home, they belonged to a swim team.  There was a swim meet near Santa Cruz on a 3 day weekend.  The team competed for 2 days, but on the last day we went to the beach.  One of my daughters, about 8 at the time disappeared for about an hour.  We were all so frantic.  Finally, she popped up out of the sand .  She had wandered up closer to the upper edge of the beach, covered herself up with warm sand (other than her face) and went to sleep.  I didn't know whether to whup her or hug her:-)

Hi Myrl - I think I would hug her and then maybe a little whup so she remembers. There is no worse feeling in the world than not knowing where your kids are and if they are safe.
