Notes from a Chicago Home Inspector - Cash Incentives for Energy Efficiency
As a home inspector, there's always something to talk about, whether we're discussing the secrets of old-time craftsmanship, new energy efficiency innovations, or the more meat-and-potatoes topics like plumbing, roofing, and circuit breakers. But it's getting late and I've been working my tail off for the past two weeks. Not complaining... it's great to be busy! But tonight, I just really didn't feel like getting into a discussion on reversed polarity or ice dams or EIFS/Stucco/Flashing.
Inspiration Station to the rescue! "Write about money. Spring Rebates."
Guess What? There's a bunch of them! Here are a few, from just one source: our local electric company, ComEd.
They have programs to give you money for making upgrades to your home. If you live in the Chicago area, you should really check these out. Some examples of local rebate, discount, and cash back programs they've got running right now:
- Recycling your old refrigerator - $50 back, and they take the old fridge away for free!
- Replacing your clothes washer - $75 rebate select models from select retailers
- Replacing your furnace and central air conditioner - up to $1000 back!
In addition, ComEd is offering home energy audits through BPI at a substantially reduced rate, and another rebate is available for the cost of upgrading the energy efficiency of your house. A substantial rebate: 70%, up to $1,750. That's some real dough.

These rebates are local to the Chicago area. If you're outside the Chicago area, I'd encourage you to look up your local gas and electric company websites to see if they have similar rebate programs in place. There might be free money where you live, too!
