Looking back over the past 6 years of writing the Tallahassee Real Estate Blog, one of the most often repeated questions that I receive is "should I do a short sale?"

I have written numerous articles to address this and I even offer a free e-Book titled Should I Short Sale My Home? that has been downloaded by more than 1,500 people seeking answers to their difficult housing situations.

So today I want to share feedback from some of these past survivors who have made the tough choice to sell an upside-down home and how their life has been impacted years later.

Joe, Should I Do A Short Sale?

Should I Short Sale My Home?First of all, the answer depends on far too many factors for me to provide a one-size-fits-all answer. In fact, our e-Book is over 80 pages and addresses just about everything you could possible asking about short selling a home, so I strongly recommend that you download and read the free resource Should I Short Sale My Home?

Secondly, after through the material, you will likely determine reasons both for and against doing a short sale. Because of this, it is very likely that the stress of making a decision could cause you to procrastinate and push making a decision off into the future. This is a HUGE MISTAKE!

If you are thinking ... "should I do a short sale," than the answer is either "yes" or "no." By doing nothing, you are basically saying "no for now," and the feedback that we have received from past customers makes me believe that procrastination will be very costly to you.

Using Hindsight When Asking "Should I Do A Short Sale"

While none of us are blessed with the ability to use hindsight to make a forward looking decision, we can use the experience of others to help us understand the impact of our actions today.

I have received numerous emails and phone calls from past clients who faced the "should I do a short sale" question several years ago and reluctantly chose to do so. Many of them were living "rent free" because they had stopped making a mortgage payment, and this led them to believe they were in no hurry to sell.

But to a person, they all tell me they are glad they got it over with and moved on. Some have divorced. Some have married. Some of the are now in great financial shape. Some are still struggling with money problems. But all say "I should have done it sooner!"

I think the most common ground on going ahead with a short sale is that they have gone from being "owned by a house" to a position of dealing with their problems. The place that they live no longer is the most dominant factor in their budget, or their lives.

The common feedback is that by doing a short sale, they solved a problem. It was a lot less painful than they expected, and years later they are better off for having done so.

Take the time to read our e-Book, and remember, you can always drop me a note and we can schedule a time answer your question ... should I do a short sale?
