Do Oregonians really hate Californians?  Do I need to get my license plate changed quick? I sell real estate in Southern Oregon (the Medford, Ashland area) and I get these questions all the time from potential Californian buyers.

The reason this legend persists if because of a Governor we once had who said "Come visit us again and again. This is a state of excitement. But for heaven's sake, don't move here to live."

The truth is that most people in Southern Oregon have lived at sometime or another in California so we don't hate you.  In fact, we have a saying "When did you do time in California?"

As long as you don't try to turn this state into California (californicate it), you are welcome to be here.  So come visit and please stay and buy real estate!

By the way, I am from California, too.

I Love Oregon and used to have a loft in Portland-  but what's so bad about California??

I think those that have a place in the North West and Palm Springs have the best of BOTH worlds!!!

The is a lot of godd things about California.   I agree there are a lot of people that have both a home here and in the Desert - the best of both worlds.  BTW, my dad live in Palm Desert.

Krista,

If you don't want the overflow, send 'em to Wisconsin and we will show them some great deals - we like neighbors with tans-they know the way to the beach!

Krista - You mean they didn't close the gate behind us, and more Californians are getting in? :-> Who can blame them! Southern Oregon is a wonderful place to live.

Krista, I did training in the Portland / Beaverton area for four months one time in my career and love the state. I had heard that expression too about Californians visiting but please go home. I think it is two different cultures and Oregonians don't want to be Californians. Nothing wrong with that.

Gary - you are right about the different cultures.  You should know too since you live in Texas.  Another culture too.  My mom used to live outside of Dallas.  I visited once and thought I was in a differnet country

I think it would be even nicer if we collected sales tax from our visitors south of here, but I guess that's a whole other can of worms! I grew up in californina too, back when the sales tax there was only 6% (it helped me learn how to do math in my head when I was shopping!)

Some friends of mine are moving to the Portland area next month. The husband is already there working as a chef and his wife has been up frequently to visit. I asked about the attitudes and they said people have been EXTREMELY friendly, very warm, open and accepting.

I think sometimes it's that 'Ugly American' syndrome - we go someplace, mock their culture, flash our cash, complain about their food, demand they talk like we do and are surprised when they turn on us. Oregonians apparently are very friendly, outgoing and make good pets.

Gene- you are so right. We do mock others.  I notice that we complain about how foreigners don't act like us, but if you look at the ex-pats from the US, they dont give up their US ways and all congregate together.
