Moving to Fort Bragg Area with Pets? ~ Some Things You Should Know

If you are moving to the Fort Bragg area and have pets in your family, here are few things that you should know.

Cumberland County Code allows for no more than a total of three dogs or cats or any combination. (over five months of age) in any single-family residential lot.

Or no more than two dogs or cats in a multifamily residential housing.

You are required to apply for an annual Privilege license for each dog or cat over four months of age, from the Cumberland County Tax Administrator. Failure to obtain a privilege license for your pet could result in a civil penalty in the amount of $100.00 per dog or cat. Each privilege license issued shall be for a calendar year.

County residents who are sixty-five years of age  or older may obtain a permanent license for up to three cats or dogs, or any combination thereof, at no cost; provided that this permanent license shall be limited to no more than three animals per household. Also, County residents may obtain a permanent license at no cost for a bona fide seeing-eye or aid dog.

Upon issuance of a license, a tag shall be issued for each dog and cat.

It is also required to have current Rabies (hydrophobia) Vaccinations for any dog, cat or ferret four months of age or older.

Visit the Cumberland County Animal Control website for more information or laws on wild and exotic animals or dangerous dogs.

If you intend on renting a home in the area, pets can limit your options. Many homeowners will not allow pets in the home. Most who do, have a size limit or restrictions.

If you are considering buying a home, be sure to talk to your real estate agent about your pets! Many neighborhoods have Restrictive Covenants which include rules for your pets, some require high amount of liability insurance and some do not allow for certain types of dogs. The most common restriction I see include Pit Bulls, Dobermans, Rottweilers, German Shepherds and Chow Chows.

If you need to board your pets during your transition to Fort Bragg, here are two places that I use regularly to care for my pets.
