Did you drop in your rankings in mid December to late December on Google?

Did you have a #1 or #2 strong position for your blogs or websites and then dropped to #6?

Was your site a good long standing site and then you dropped all of a sudden?

I read some blogs here on Active Rain where the bloggers thought that this was Active Rain's algorithms but now in light of Matt Cutt's statement we know that this has nothing to do with Active Rain or how Google views Active Rain.

Then in the online marketing community there was a rumor that started to spread that Google had a mysterious #6 position penalty going on and Matt Cutts of Google denied originally that this was going on but after some research he discovered that there was some thing going on that was causing this to happen.

This is what Matt Cutts had to say:

"When Barry asked me about "position 6" in late December, I said that I didn't know of anything that would cause that. But about a week or so after that, my attention was brought to something that could exhibit that behavior. We're in the process of changing the behavior; I think the change is live at some datacenters already and will be live at most data centers in the next few weeks.

In general if you think a site might have a penalty (perhaps from past behavior) and you think the site is clean presently, you can do a reconsideration request in our webmaster console to ask Google to take another look at the site." source; Ineedhits.com news.

If you are still suffering this drop in your site and you believe that your site did not deserve this drop you can contact Google and ask for a reconsideration.

Just keep on blogging anyways. If this did happen to you; you can climb up very fast with some quick longtail keyword rich posts that you can write now.

Great post.  Would like to write more but need to do the same thing you just did!

Good info. I will have to check my ranking and see if I dropped.

Thanks for sharing this information.  I had noticed some strange movement in the ranking of my website.  I definitely try to learn all I can about SEO and rankings.  I want to read some more on this as well.

Hi Katerina...This happens all the time to me, as long as I stay on the front page, it's fine. Besides long tail key words are better. My Blog yesterday about Victoria luxury waterfront homes sales ......these long tail key words  hit #1 overnight on Goggle.

 THANKS

Katerina, Does this have to be with sites that have a PR of #6 only?  I went from a Four to a Three...on a Page Rank and I'm not sure if it's the same thing?

Need to have my SEO guru review this. Thanks!

I haven't made it to #1 for anything but long tails... and I love the long tails.  They seem to like me, too...

02/05/2008 09:26 PM by Lane Bailey - REALTOR & Car Guy (Diamond Dwellings Realty)

KATERINA - I have maintained the only #1 position that I have already achieved.  Of course, since I started learning about longtail, I can now place myself at the top for various posts.  One, in particular, that has impressed me is a restaurant review that I did.  I actually appear at the top, ahead of the restaurant's website itself, and some of the bigger sites that focus on Long Island.

I checked all mine last week as my web site had dropped, but my blogs stay strong. Interesting to hear what Matt said. Did yours drop?

02/06/2008 06:19 AM by Missy Caulk Ann Arbor Real Estate (Keller Williams Ann Arbor)

Katerina- I had read about this. Seo is always interesting. I have seen my site drop off the map  for a day or two and then come right back - it is weird sometimes. Who knows what causes this odd behavior.

02/06/2008 06:20 AM by Bill Gassett Metrowest Massachusetts Real Estate (RE/MAX Executive Realty)

Katerina, I haven't seen this happen to any of my posts that have achieved #1 or #2 spots (and there are lots of them).  #6 wouldn't be so bad compared to not being on page 1 at all, though I have heard that anything past #3 or #4 doesn't get 1/2 as many clickthroughs as 1 or 2.

02/06/2008 06:31 AM by Brian Block -- Northern Virginia & D.C. Real Estate (RE/MAX Allegiance)

Katerina, If you haven't yet, I'd like to see a post about your long signature in all of your posts.  Why is it constructed like it is?

02/06/2008 06:41 AM by Bradenton Florida Real Estate - Dan Forbes (Sarasota Metro Properties)

Bradenton Florida Real Estate - Dan Forbes REALTOR®

Dan- One of the parts that makes the signature so long is the stupid disclaimer that unfortunately in light of the law suit against a fellow blogger in our backyard was a necessary step recommended by our attorney. The copyright sentence is self explanatory. The title of the post goes in the copyright for SEO because I found Google picking up my copyright and using that in their description section on the search result pages. So I added the keyword title there so now they pick that up instead of my copyright.

There are two call to action sections and one point of contact section. Based on my marketing backround, these are necessary for response, especially the P.S. Sounds like I can do a post about this, I'll put it on my list.

Dennis, it did not happen to everyone and you may not be affected by the mysterious #6. I like to know that google does try to stay on top of things.

Excellent information.  Another thing to learn more about.

Fred Carver,Victoria BC Realtor

Fred- You are doing great! You are beating out all your competition and you are #1 for many longtail keywords! Keep up the great work!

Carole Provenzale Owner, Feng Shui Long Island

No, not the same thing. Page rank is what rank google gives your site. The positioning we are talking about is where on the search page you are.

Lane- no need to fret about that! That is better, longtail brings better quality calls. So keep on getting to the top with long tail keywords!

Adam- I know you are doing great with your longtail keywords. Keep up the great job! You said you were going to change the title to the restaurant review and that turned out to be the right move!

Missy Caulk Ann Arbor Real Estate

Missy- Nope, mine did not drop. Even better when I dropped the successnet site and pointed our domain name to point 2;we kept our #1 position! I was surprised and it was even spidered.

Brian Block -- Northern Virginia & D.C. Real Estate

Brian- They may not get as many click throughs, but that is not what we want and we want the phone to ring. I find the more research a person is doing the deeper into the pages they will go. People have ignored all the page one results and gone to page 2 on some of my search terms and clicked through and then called. I will take quality over quantity any day.
