Haven't we all heard jokes about taking cold showers?

A recent article in Natural Health touts the benefits of cold showers...cold showers not only save energy but also can improve your health! The article goes on to say research has shown that a cold shower can reduce your risk of a cold by 40%. The article brought to mind a doctor in Saginaw Michigan who worked out at the Y with my Dad. The Doc never used soap, yet never had any body odor. When he told my Dad why he said he always uses cold showers which cleanses the body and closes the pores without the need for soap. The doctor, by the way, was well into his golden years when the conversation with my Dad took place! and he didn't smell! I've never forgotten it...but have also never desired to try it!!

I don't know about you, but I have found especially this time of the year in Michigan when temperatures have been below freezing and we have had crazy snow storms I enjoy my hot showers! Have you ever gotten chilled to the bone and just couldn't shake it? A long, hot shower can cure that!

Andrew Bigelow Coopersville MichiganThis morning when my muscles ached from my new workout program (my personal trainer is ruthless and has no mercy!) the long, hot shower helped that! (yup, that's his picture, not me!)

I know I teased you with that title but what I REALLY want to talk about is HOT water!

Let's think about the many uses for hot water...

  1. HOT Shower/Baths - how many people live in your home?
  2. Dishwashing/Sanitizing Dishes - do you run your dishwasher once a day?
  3. Clothes Washing - how many warm/hot loads do you run per week?
  4. Handwashing - I certainly HOPE you wash your hands every time! That gets back to the HEALTH thing!
  5. Can you think of more??

Do you know the typical family of four uses about 80 gallons of hot water PER DAY? Do you know that Hot Water is the second largest energy cost in the average home? Natural Gas which is the most popular fuel to heat water in Michigan is more efficient than electric. It still adds up over the course of a year. And...year after year, price increase after price increase...homeowner's continue to pay for it.

So how can the average duck heat  water affordably?Ducks in Wyoming MIchigan

SOLAR DOMESTIC HOT WATER!!!

There has been so much discussion recently about solar and renewable applications. Until I started researching renewables I did not realize that the most affordable way for the average homeowner to start renewable energy is by installing a Solar Domestic Hot Water System - also referred to as Solar Thermal.

I know the burning (pun intended) question in your mind right now is how does solar hot water work?

In a nutshell, the energy/heat from the sun is free. Yes, I said FREE! Collectors on your roof, or on a ground mount if you don't have a good roof site, capture the heat from the sun. That heat is channeled down pipes to a tank where cold water is heated and stored. The storage tank is highly efficient so it will continue to keep the heat in after the sun goes down.

What if I have cloudy days? As long as there is sun some preheating will be done, even through the clouds. Of course, in Michigan the system will not preheat as well in the winter. Michigan has good solar ! Even during our darkest months the Solar Hot Water system will offer a great assist!

A Solar Hot Water System is easily retrofitted and tied into your current hot water heating system which will act as a back up system when the solar gain is not adequate. For the average homeowner, Solar Hot Water is the MOST affordable way to start in renewables and has the quickest payback. I am working with forward thinking builders who are adding this to homes as a standard feature! In this day and age of $100/barrel oil it shouldn't even be a question.

                                                   Do you need MORE INCENTIVE???

Through Dec 2008 there is a federal tax credit of 30% up to $2000 for homeowners and there is no cap on the credit for businesses. Keep in mind, credits are more valuable than deductions, it is dollar for dollar. State Incentives vary and if you click on my link you can see what your state offers. As I always recommend, if your state is like Michigan and does not offer incentives PLEASE contact your reps and explain how important this is to you!

Just think the effect this could have on B & B's, laundramats and farms! What a very simple and effective way to reduce utilities and help preserve our earth.

Harnessing the heat from the SUN is just COOL!

Excellent information Mary - solar heating has always been of interest to me, but seemed quite mysterious to practical application - it's coming clearer!

Hi Gary - you can link to our website from my AR links or www.greenenergystar.com

New website is under construction and we are hoping to roll it out later this spring. Our current website doesn't have much on it.

Hopefully I'll get a blog written on tax credits this weekend. Thanks!

Great article as always. I'm with you, I'm not sure I could handle cold showers... BTW, maybe your personal trainer can help me lose weight?  What do you think?  Sorry, I know that wasn't the core of the article but got me to think about exercising tonight! :)

This may not be a smart question. Can it be retrofitted to an existing home?

Hi Robert! There are never any "not smart" questions - especially with products like this that are not very well understood! Matter of fact! It was a great question that I should have addressed!

Yes, we retrofit these to existing homes. We tie it right in to your current system. In fact, my partners Standale Lumber are launching a neighborhood bulk purchase program. Let me know if your neighborhood is interested and we will arrange a seminar, free site evaluations and a tiered pricing based on the number of systems purchased in your neighborhood!

Oh Mary~ you scared me.  I cannot give up a nice warm shower after shoveling snow for 1 - 2 hours.  I have to have my hot coffee and then a nice warm shower.  I will have to see if the solar will work in New Hamphire.  Something to look into for sure.  I know there have been some problems with some town permitting solar panels -- have you found that to be an issue?

HI Joan! We're shoveling a lot of snow around here also! Here's a Solar Potential Map where you can check your area. It looks to me like NH has as good, possibly better than Michigan. Allan (my new boss) said in August this past year his water was heated completely with the solar. He is on wind and solar - his energy bills are a max of $60/mo. How nice would that be! Do you heat your water with electric or gas (propane or natural)?

It looks to me like NH also gets an additional rebate from the state of 15% up to  $1500 - you can check it out here under Solar Thermal through KeySpan. Better do it quickly if you want that extra rebate! It expires April 18 2008!! Check it out!

I have not heard too much about municipalities not permitting solar. I think that is found more in deed restrictions. I think there is more of a problem with wind towers.

Cold showers are OK if you are a Yettie. This is a perfect reason to at least utilize solar water heat on your home. Who in their right mind wants to take a cold shower in this nasty, depressive, cold and empty Michigan winter. I guess I just don't like snow and warm showers are a good way to forgot about the frost barren tundra. Great post Mary!

Thanks Josh! It is a tundra out there, isn't it? Sounds like you are ready to head south for some warm weather!!! Michigan needs to get on board with some rebates/incentives. I am browsing what other states have to offer, we are behind the 8 ball on this!

I bet the researchers would change their mind if I sent them up to my deer camp in the winter and had them take a nice cold shower. They probably would turn Smurf blue and definitely wouldn't turn green!

Funny Josh and I like the "snow officer" title! I wonder how many of the researchers put it into action! There is something not right about cold showers! We will need to install one of these at deer camp! What a perfect place for it! I think the hunters and fisherman will LOVE this product~

HI Ed! The horses? Took that picture at Ranch Rudolph a while back! I thought it would be fun to showcase a little bit of Michigan! I suppose it also makes me think about days when horsepower meant the number of horses tied up to one's buggy! I don't know how much feed a horse has in a day but I would bet it costs less than what I have to put in my gas tank!

It has been fun and interesting learning the renewable business. I guess I took those physics courses for a reason! It's amazing how simple the technology behind the Solar Hot Water really is. I've learned so much but there is so much more to learn!

Thanks for the clarification.  A horse (my brother's anyway) could probably make a bale last a few days.  But now the price of that is sky-rocketing, too.

Do you have pamphlets and other materials that you could send me or our office with information/pricing?

Hey Mary,  Solar Hot Water Heaters fascinate me.  What is the cost for an average size home?  2000 sq ft.
8:33pm • #25

Average family of 4 - $5500 - 7000 installed with either a new tank or a new storage tank tied into your system! AND Warrantied! At the upper levels you may find some cool digital displays installed in a not so conspicuous place where you can brag to your guests! There are no moving parts on these systems so maintenence issues are virtually nill! But...work with a company like Contractors and if your roof needs to be replaced down the road we will come out and pull the panels and replace them so they are fixed and connected properly for you! (and your roofers!) Don't forget to find out your state rebates/credits at www.dsireusa.com!

Hi Denise!

You are right! Check out this press release from Land Tejas

which quotes "our" own, Stephanie Edwards who says, "we are still overcoming the misconception that it's too costly."

Also take note of the quote from David Weekly who comments on consumers awareness of high energy costs increasing, ""We're finding that regardless of price range, everyone's concerned about their monthly energy costs and their energy usage," Weekley said. "Most people will admit they think electricity costs are going to go up fairly dramatically, so the concern is if someone buys a home that's not green, it could be obsolete in a short amount of time."

Our country needs to overcome many concerns about with renewable energy and put it in proper perspective! One of those concerns is costs and long term BENEFITS. Many folks think nothing of purchasing a new vehicle with a conservative cost of $24,000, drive it off the lot and it is worth much less, let's say $16,000 (net loss - $8000 or .33%.) They will pay several hundred a month for that car, plus insurance and gas. No questions asked. (let's not even talk maintenance...oil changes, tires, tune ups, etc)

Spend $7000 on a solar hot water system that will increase the value of my home, cost nothing in maintenance, cap the cost of future energy increase, and reduce my impact on the earth, requires virtually no maintenance.... Hang on, I have to think about that one....

Wow! Americans have WAY displaced values!

Thanks, Denise, for your comments and sparking my brain to a comment!!!

AFter my visit to Big Bend last week (where water is "respected" because of the lack of it in the desert) and having to pay $1.50 for a 5 minute shower I have come to appreciate my shower time a WHOLE lot more and so has the rest of the family!

I don't know if you read The MAker's Diet but the author talks about how deoderants and soaps are not good for you. Yes, I still use them. lol.

Thank you for the info. We are trying to do some upgrades like this.

I totally would recommend SolaHart brand - the kind with the water tank right on your roof - the hot water rises and you don't waste more energy pumping it down into the house.  We have a couple of them and they are great.  Of course we live in a warm climate, that helps.

Hi Cheri - wow! one doesn't dally when they are paying for it like that, do they? We tend to forget that most of us are paying for it in our own homes that way!

Thanks for the book recommendation. That is one I haven't read but I am aware of it. I recommend natural and organic personal products.

Good luck on your upgrades! Don't forget the federal tax credit for solar hot water expires this year! Now is the time....Get it while it is hot!!!

Hi Georgiana! Interesting hearing what type of system you have. We install a closed loop gycol that uses heat transfer to heat up the potable water. It works well in our climate. Also, we have a small PV panel on the roof that runs the pump so it is all free energy that runs that as well! There are times when I am quite jealous of your warm climate!!

Thanks for your comment!

Mary,

I'm always looking to save some money on bills for my home... we are on all electric; no propane, nat gas, nothing!  I just (last year) placed the new cfc light bulbs in our house... what a difference in the bill (about 20% reduction) for just one year! Might be interest in getting a cost analysis on this kind of system.

Also, I can get this info out to our agents... copy me on the Audu stuff!

Thanks for your post,

Hi Jeff - Glad you have had such good results with the CFL's! Amazing, isn't it! The team has been hard at work getting materials together so they are easy to send out. I should have things finalized to be able to drop in the mail next week.

Keep your wife warm!!!

Thanks for the comment!
