The North Richland Hills TX Farmer's Market is located off of Davis and Starnes/Rumfield Rd. It is not the traditional sense of a farmer's market. They do have farm fresh produce, local honey, flowers, vegetable plants, herbs, ceramics and fun garden items but they are locally owned grocery.
Being that my garden last year was somewhat of a failure on the tomato front since it had been our first full year of a garden here in TX, I was on the hunt for gardening information. The gentleman who initially helped me told me about some books that were written by Texas agricultural graduates that are very helpful for growing tomatoes and the seasons here for growing. The owner then came out and she answered a lot of questions I had specifically about tomatoes since I am mainly concerned about getting a bumper crop of my two heirloom varieties that I have started.
My main mistake last year was starting the seeds too late and not having enough growing time prior to the heat. I learned at the North Richland Hills TX Farmer's Market that determinate varieties of tomatoes have one growing season and then they're done. These are usually larger varieties of tomatoes. Indeterminate varieties usually can produce up through November but they have to be severely cut back when the heat hits. Continue to keep them alive with fertilizer and watering but they won't produce again till fall. These are the smaller varieties of tomatoes, the cherries and grapes which we did have last year and produced til December.
I am still in the experimental stages of my gardening but I am confident this year.
While I was at the NRH Farmer's Market I bought a Celebrity tomato plant which is indeterminate and should last all year after cutting back. I was told that it was a great tasting tomato so what the heck at $1.99 and a Thai basil for $1.59. The leaves on the basil smell like liquorice/anise and I was curious to see how they tasted on my famous caprese salad that I make (recipe to come soon!
