I get it all the time: “You seem older,” or “I just knew you were older. Oh, no, not the way you look, it’s the way you act (carry yourself, behave, insert other verb here).” After the initial chagrin wears off (they must really think I LOOK old), I do accept this as a compliment.

How did I end up this way? Well, I grew up around adults more than kids. And I grew up down South…that means don’t speak unless you’re spoken to, which translates into a whole lot of listening. I was at the family business office far more than the playground, so I had to be inventive: forts out of couch cushions, drawing and photocopying magazines (25 cents per subscription, thank you), and behaving at the “grown up” lunch table.

earWhile Gen X and Y rush to hush the older set, today I still revert to listening and then sharing. That’s why before I go “whole hog” on my blog, I’ve been aiming to read at least 15 – 20 blogs a day (and commenting on 10, a girl’s gotta get her points in!).

So I’m not going to whine about who’s got a gazillion points.

heavy hitter

You heavyhitters (you know who you are and you’re proud of it!) earned your points, and yes, I’m at the bottom of the totem pole. And that’s OK. My mother taught me the value of hard work and I’m pretty skeptical of the longevity of your average Get-Rich-Quick Scheme. (although GRQSs do make for fun daydreams!)

When I’ve got more to say (after I’ve learned a bit from the seasoned vets), I’ll blog more.
Until then, I’ll get points from commenting on the day’s hot topics. And make those comments worth something ---an occasional “thanks for sharing” is fine, but if you can add more insight, a new spin, or put some humor in your reply, do so! Because the next thing I do after reading a good blog post, is check out the blogs of the people who had enjoyable/noteworthy replies! We all appreciate someone who can “speak to us” and when I find a likeminded blogger, I like to see what else he or she has to say. Or if I find a particularly UNlikeminded blogger, well, guess what? I want to see what you have to say as well. After all, aren’t we all lifetime learners?

Just jump in!! It's really warm.......... :) (I'm the kid who would have told you that even if it was freezing.........so you're better off just sticking your toe in.....haha)

I certainly encourage people to just read and comment to get started. Sometimes you get someone that wants to just dive right in, and that's fine too. It can work great that way as well. Longevity is the key to a successful real estate business and a successful blog, so your Mother taught you well :)

Hi Audrey, nice to "meet" you and welcome to the Rain. We're all still learning from one another so don't be shy to step up and share ideas, comments or whatever. Overall it's a pretty nice bunch of people here.

Audrey, before I started blogging earnestly and consistently, I spent a few weeks here just reading and commenting and reading some more.  There is so much to learn from reading other's blogs and after a while you do feel comfortable to jump into the fray yourself.

Hi Audrey, I thought your post was great.  I have lots of points but they have been accumulated over a years time and I usually only post 3 to 4 times a week but I always make my 10 comments (well probably a lot more).  I have always thought of myself as a tortoise, really in about everything I do but like you I like to think on something before I leap.

Audrey:  Great post and if I look forward to more of your blogs.  I from the South too, so I know exactly what you mean.  Used to be children were supposed to be seen and not heard, now that I'm a grandmother, I'm learning that older people are supposed to be seen and not heard and sometimes not seen.  Good thing I had years of practice being seen and not heard while growing up.

Harley--Glad you enjoyed my comment.  When I get a chance, I'm sending you photos of the condition of the street I mentioned.  Feel free to use it to show it to any and all on just why that method DOES NOT make sense.

Donna--My grandparents were only in my life for a short time.  Whether it feels like it or not, I know those youngin's are grateful to have you and listening---even when it doesn't seem like it!

Elaine--Singing "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" in my head now

Hi Audrey,  Thanks...no rush on that but if you happen to get a chance I will use it to make the point.  I'm on jury duty now (heading into my second week), so life has intruded upon my crusade to stop (or redirect) the sidewalk police.  Cheers, Harley

AUDREY - Welcome to Active Rain.  I found you on Margaret Woda's "Hidden Gems" post.  I like your approach, and I really think that you'll stand out because of the comic strip style that you've done in other posts.  It's a great way to get peoples' attention, and also to make them remember you.  I look forward to reading more of your blog.

Adam--Thanks for the kind words! I thought the comic would add something different to the rain mix :)

Audrey, I actually jumped right in. I did read some blogs before hand but the first day I became a member, I posted a blog. For the most part, I still have some hesitation in posting. As time goes by, I'm getting over it. For the most part, my time does consist of reading members blogs and commenting. It's the interaction thing. With me, I'm more of an in person type. I love people. No matter what, I'll find the good in everyone.

You have the right mind frame. Keep it up and you'll be successful not only in AR but in life. Welcome and thank-you for commenting on my blog.
