What Is The Biggest Mistake You Made in Your Career?

By
Real Estate Agent with The Charlotte Home Team/Keller Williams 56005

Charlotte, NC:  Recently at a Keller Williams Southparkk sales meeting we had a panel of the top agents in the office sit for an open forum Q & A from the rest of the agents in the office.  One newer agent asked this question.  "What was your biggest mistake?"  The answers varied in specifics but over all most of the answers had to do with trying to do too much themselves and not getting the help they needed when they needed it...closing coordinators, ad min help, etc.  Another main mistake was not being consistent.  Typical of most agents I would say.

I would have to add that my biggest mistake was not staying in touch with my past clients in ASKING FOR BUSINESS!  I assumed that if I did a good job for my clients that they would refer me; and some did but many did not. They would have if they had thought about it.  For the first 10 years of my career I was what could be called a "hit and run" agent.  I hoped they would refer me, and a few did, and some came back to me after several years , but I never asked.

Then I wised up.  I started to send out a newsletter every month to everyone who had bought from me or who would know me if we ran into each other in the grocery store.  The newsletter is hand written by me and is designed not to look slick.  It is personal,  about me and my family and real estate and how it effects them personally. It is much like those Christmas newsletter we say we hate but read anyway.   My hope was that they would see my face as it went into trash can and it would be a tickler to remember me.  Much to my surprise they read it!  They comment and they refer me their friends and family.  It is the best thing I ever did to grow my business.

My only regret is that I did not have the kind of training and support in the first haf of my career that I have had in the second.  I am grateful to Gary Keller of Keller Williams Realty and his committment  education and lifelong learning.
