How to be Productive

We all know if something isn’t functioning then it is sitting still. People are no different than machinery in this regard.  There are many self-help books and industry leading experts who weigh-in on how to be productive. I have found that there are a few items, if absent, will cause individuals as well as teams to improperly function. So here are a few things that good teams understand and incorporate to stay productive.

1.   Communicate, Communicate, Communicate- This is the first and most important component to any team. When communication fails other aspects of the job begin to fail as well. If a team cannot effectively speak with one another, then tasks are destined to be neglected, forgotten about, or never known about. It is crucial to listen as much as you speak in order to understand everyone’s input. Without information the team cannot function properly.

2.   Commitment to the task- If someone doesn’t want to do a task it becomes more difficult to be productive. Found out why there is a lack of commitment and then most likely productivity will pick up the pace again.Again this stems back to the lack of communication. It may simply be that it is not understood how committed you need to be in order to produce the best outcome.

3.   Establish Clear Goals- Teams are comprised of more than one person so it is common to encounter different goals and priorities. It is important to make sure that distinct time-lines for projects are explained in detail. In order to do what needs to be done you have to know what you need to be doing and why. Once you and your team know this, you can assign roles and clarify expectations.

4.   Do what you say you will do – If you say you will complete a specific task- DO IT. If you cannot be accountable for your portion of the work then trust is broken. Trust, once broken is difficult to re-establish. So, be responsible for your actions and your words.

5. Leadership- There will be someone who is good at staying to task, understands the agenda, communicates the agenda and keeps everyone else focused. This person is the leader. This is the person that is trusted, has direction, andwill question everything. The team will often look to someone as inspiration and motivation. Know who this person is in your team.

Evaluate these steps. How many of them are you consistently using? Make sure you and/or your team is fulfilling its true potential. Teamwork
