Memphis Tornadoes

My wife and I were at work, Keller Williams Realty Germantown/Collierville office, yesterday when the storms came through. The sirens were going off for several hours. We finally left at 6 pm and discovered that a bad part of the storm (possible tornado) came down about 1 mile from our office. Luckily, we were not harmed and our home was fine.

These are some helpful tips I found today while browsing the internet.

  • Know where to go in your home, work, or etc. when a storm is coming.  Do not wait to find a place once the weather starts. It should be the lowest place in the building, such as a basement, center hallway, closet, bathroom, etc.
  • If you're outside, hurry to a nearby sturdy building, or lie flat in a nearby ditch.
  • If you're in a car, get out and seek immediate shelter.
  • Have a weather radio with batteries in case the power goes out.
  • Have flashlights and extra batteries.
  • I personally started charging my cell phone as soon as I got home in of danger. I guess I have seen too much tv where a disaster strikes and everyone's cell phone is always dead.
  • "Tornado Watch" - means a tornado is possible
  • "Tornado Warning" - means an actual tornado has been spotted. Seek shelter immediately!
  • Search your home with a flashlight for damage - Do NOT use a candle in case of ruptured gas lines.
  • Do not sightsee around the area or collect wreckage - you may get in the way of authorities.

I found most of those things helpful to know.  I personally got the flash lights ready and back up batteries, but we were fine.
