Use it (Social Media) or Lose it (Real Estate Business).

Question is no more Is Social Media partSocial Media Marketing of your Business Plan, but 'Why is Social Media not part of your business plan. Mary Yonkers featured blog Does your Business Plan include Social Media? reminds us that Social Media should be part of our Business Plan.

What is Social Media? Unless you have been stranded on a desert island with Tom Hanks's character in Cast Away or lost on another planet, you will know that Social Media is kinda like a lyric to one of LL Cool J's song "It is something like a Phenomenon. (Please don't ask me to sing that song). Social media refers to the means of interactions among people in which they create, share, and exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks. Social Media consumes a good portion of not only our day but it has sort of become part of our life.

Why should I utilize Social Media in my Business Plan? According to an article by Janine Popick of Inc.Magazine Where CEO's spend their time and money on Social Media,do you know that 50 percent of companies/professionals in real estate are active on Pinterest? Pinterest is one of the most popular Social Media sites that is growing at an alarming rate. Now you can measure the web analytics to track the traffic. Read this blog Why you should finally get on the Express called Pinterest? Been trying to get a hold of someone but have had no luck? Chances are they are on one of the major Social Media sites. Many large and small business companies have invested advertising dollars in Social Media because they know that many people who they are trying to target with their product are on Social Media sites hoping to engage with them, expose their brand and increase their sales.

Social Media ROI (Return on Investment)? Done many searches on this topic and have yet to find data to show how much % will you yield on your investment in Social Media Marketing. However during my research many companies have stated that using Social Media, they were able to increase consumer engagement, collect competitive intelligence, generate sales, strengthen brand, monitor business and acquire contacts.

Can't afford not to have a Social Media strategy. Hire a Social Media Consultant if you can. Before you hire a Social Media Consultant, you need to figure out what you want to accomplish with Social Media. Do you want to generate sales? Increase brand awareness? Establish thought leadership for your CEO or company? Connect with donors? And when you contact with a Social Media Consultant or agency, they should be asking you questions as well to see if they would be a good fit or know what you are trying to accomplish with your Social Media Marketing. If someone tries to push you into using their services,RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN. But if you can't hire a Social Media Consultant try not to exceed no more than 15 mintues a day on Social Media sites engaging and sharing content with people. There is a Google Android app called Currents. You can use this app to post current news in Business,Sports,Health and other topics to your Social Media pages.

But as long as you are consistent in providing valuable content to your followers, sooner or later, your efforts will start to pay off.

Hi Lanre,

A consultant is a great idea. Especially since so many people are starting their search online.

Lanre, I presumed that very few people have actual social media strategy. .simply emulating others that are perceived successful. .not a good plan

I see social media as being a place we have to be and maintain an active presence.  However, I don't see it as being as valuable as blogging in terms of lead generation.

Social Media also has to be kept in balance. You can quickly get sucked into Twitter or Facebook and get nothing done. Trust me, I speak from experience.

I can't say a client has come to me from my Facebook Page, but they very well may have checked me out there. (NONE of my pages require us to be friends before you can see photos! That's important if you want to use Social Media!)

But I still put content there, and try to update it!

And Twitter is a great way to get your posts and pages out to people that may in turn forward them.
