Real Estate is not for the feint of heart

Real Estate is not for the feint of heart and that is for sure.  There are always issues that must be dealt with.  Lies are part of it, so is cheating and The heat is on, Newton MA home for saleemotional responses. One day you world is perfect, then that phone call comes in that turns everything upside down.  Like they do in professional sports, the best approach is never get too high or too low, because the game is ongoing and the season isn't over. What do you do when you have your day blow up?  I asked this question around my office the other day.  Some drink, some go do something nice for themselves, some scream at the client, their spouse/kids/dog, some focus on the end game and realize it is not over unless you quit and go home, or stick it out and get to the end.

So many people think real estate is easy.  Many think we get paid far too much for far too little, but they have never been in conversation with an unreasonable and emotional client.  The people who think it is easy have never really done the work.  I used to think shooting the basketball was easy from watching Michael Jordan--'nuff said.

@Jim Long Ordered PhotoHaving a schedule you set and follow is a great antidote to the craziness.  The comfort of an exercise, or study routine brings sanity to a day. The daily sit down meal with the family can strip away the vitriol and the over zealous response of a client or prospect. Clearing your mind with yoga or meditation can re-center your mind and body.  If you are not a strong person with goals and focus you can easily be swept away. Even the top agents gets swept away like some huge wave taking our feet out from under us. That does not mean we drown.  In every profession there are good days and bad.  I try to remember both.  I like to say, "you think this is crazy, let me tell you the story of XYZ." The telling of the story can diminish the sting and give you strength to get up and play the next day.  I love real estate with all it's challenges, ups and downs, but I know deep in my heart that real estate is not for the feint of heart.

Hear Hear; well said Larry. I have often said to my colleagues (when one or the other is regaling a story too crazy to even believe) that you need to be a manic depressant to be an agent with all the highs and lows (tongue in cheek of course) Not for the faint of heart indeed.

If real estate were easy everyone would be doing it and agents wouldn't leave the business when the market gets tough. We all have bad days. It's what we do with them that matters. When I have a bad day, I spend time with my family and try to find something to laugh about. After all, laughter is the best medicine.

@ Dana,  It was a tough day yesterday, but resilience and focus brings it around every time. Thanks for your comment

@Pamela  In MA it seems you can't swing a cat around your head without hitting a licensed agent.  The qualifications moved from 20 hours to 40 hours of study to obtain the license.  Precious little training to take on this complex business.

@Wayne, I always appreciate your comments. Thank you.
