What is a Seniors Real Estate Specialist (SRES)

By: Linda K Mayer, SRES

Okay, so I told you how I recently received my Seniors Real Estate SpecialistDesignation (SRES).  So now let me tell you a little bit about what an SRES is and how that factors in to taking care of your elderly relative, or even a baby boomer who may need to make a change.

The Seniors Real Estate Specialist Course is at least 12 hours of concentrated study on various topics that can affect senior citizens or even baby boomers.  It covers issues such as tax implications for seniors, in home care, assisted living, complete care, reverse mortgages, etc.

Those who take the SRES course are taught how to distinguish between when seniors may need a reverse mortgage or when they can use other options, the difference between all types of care, and various ideas for real estate having to do with seniors.  Also taught in the course are financial planning ideas such as IRA's and 401K's, etc. Medicare, Medicaid and social security are also discussed.  An SRES actually has the complete picture so they know how to serve the seniors better than those who aren't so educated. we are taught to be a seeing eye dog, if you will, for the various issues that affect seniors and their families.

So if you are in the SoCal 210 Corridor area, don't hesitate to give me a call or send an email for help or references.  My senior website has some references listed, but I have many, many more available.  Reliable Senior Help. And if you happen to be looking to buy or sell a home, the website for a home search is LindaKay.Biz.

Linda,

Congratulations on getting your SRES® designation.  It sounds like you are off and running.  I teach the course in the San Jose area, in fact I just held one last month.  It is all those things you mentioned...and more.  You are now armed with information to go out and change someone's life!

There is a SRES® group here on AR that you may want to join.  Also, LinkedIn has a very active group you may want to join as well.  There are 2 groups on LI but the smaller one isn't as active.  Check them out.  And certainly you want to fill out the profile on the SRES® website and check out the various blogs, comments, events, etc. on it.

If you feel that this is your true calling, you may want to check into the Certified Senior Advisor® course.  Kinda the PhD level for senior stuff.  Not a real estate class, but REALTORS® do take it and benefit from all the info.  www.csa.us

If you happen to be in the San Jose area in Oct. I run a half day class exclusively for SRES® REALTORS® on things beyond the SRES® class.  I usually hold it shortly after my SRES® class.  No date has been set yet, but it will be in Oct. sometime.  Here is the flyer I use...

WHAT SRES® DIDN'T TEACH YOU

How far down the rabbit hole do you want to go?

This one day class is exclusively for SRES® REALTORS® who want to learn more than what the basic SRES® class taught.  Perhaps you got the designation when it was first introduced as a bare bones course, or maybe it has been awhile since you obtained it. Or maybe you just want a refresher and to know what changes and new ideas have been happening.  Or perhaps you just want to know more to help with your activities in working with Seniors.  Whatever it is, this course will help.  It covers topics not included in the SRES® course, and expands some areas that were merely touched upon.  Areas like....

Understanding How We Age
Medicare and Medical
Long Term Care Insurance
Driving problems with older people (taking away the keys)
Technology
The Sandwich Generation & Multigenerational Households
Housing
The Village
Memory Units and Alzheimer's disease
Cost of Care
Affordable Rental Housing
Services & Resources
Supplemental Retirement Funds
Caregiving
Elder Abuse
Scams & Schemes
Where to Find Business
and more

This class isn't for every REALTOR®, but if you want to do more than just the basic real estate skills and make a difference in someone's life, this course is a good start.  If you're ready to go further down the rabbit hole, sign up now.  Register with Agape Real Estate: www.AgapeRealEstate.info.  Cost is $60.  It will be held at Lexus Stevens Creek, 3333 Stevens Creek Blvd., San Jose, CA 95117.

Good luck with your ventures,

Skip

@Skip - Hi!  I am browsing around on AR reading old posts and came across this - how are you?

I am so excited as next week in Orlando I am taking the Certified Senior Advisor exam!  I can't tell you how much the course work taught me - I've already put much of it to use in my spare time as a Hospice Volunteer.

Thanks for the encouragement you gave me about becoming a CSA!
