Kathy Sheehan's Networking Tips

Networking has always been a vital part of my business and after eight years, I would like to think that I have mastered this skill.

I recently attended a networking event focused on real estate industry professionals.  There were close to 300 people in attendance!  Yes, the real estate market is good in Atlanta right now.

In my opinion, these events are a great way to build establish new relationships and develop new business opportunities.

Like any good networker, the day after the event I followed up with each individual I spoke to that evening.  Depending on their business and suitability with my business I either sent an email, hand-written notes, or phone calls for those that I wanted to meet with the following week.

Several of these contacts have already turned into new business for me and for them.  That is what I call a successful event.

So, when you take the time to network, do you take the time to follow up?  Networking is a business activity, not a social hour.

Happy to hear of your successful event.  Righ on.  We need to follow up the next day or within 3 days of meeting and need to keep in touch regularly. Thank you for the reminder.

I actually don't go to many networking events as too many realtors show up! I can't sell another house to a realtor so I mostly avoid them.

I agree, it is a business activity, not a social event.  I think the key is to not overload yourself doing it or you won't be doing it right.  If you aren't able to follow up, you may be wasting your time.

This hit home, I love the networking and do not do the best job on the follow up.  I need to and not let the fear of it get to me!  That last statement was what I am taking with me and posting on my desk!  I don't need to be wasting time but building my business!

Kathy~ Your last sentence really sums it up. It's a business activity, not a social event. Some folks don't even mingle at these events. How are you supposed to build your business connections if you just sit at a table or stand in a corner?

The events I attend are out of town and bring industry pros from around the country. Local events have all the local REALTORS or real estate agents. Not much business there.

Thanks for the post.  I consider networking to be a vital part of business, but you're absolutely right.  You get out of it what you put into it and follow-up is a must.  I find that people are very receptive, albeit surprised when you do.

Follow up is key to after networking.  That is easier said than done in this busy market, yet I know it is key to future business.

I'm almost glad there are no networking opportunities for copywriters in my small community. (Business people here let "the girls" at the newspaper write their ads, and they don't do direct mail or put up websites.)

While I love talking to people one on one and am apt to get into conversations with people in stores, etc., when I go to events I turn into the worst wallflower in the world. I simply can't force myself to walk up to a group of people and join in.

Good for you for making it work!

Good job. Networking like that is not something I am very good at.   I'm with Marte - if I go to events like that I mostly watch and listen and don't do a whole lot of talking and meeting, but they are definitely a great avenue to meet people if you try at all :-) -Kasey
