Why are you trying to kill me?

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Richard Weisser Realty

Lifeflight helicopter by Richard WeisserStatistics don’t lie. Every day in the United States 9 people die as a result of driving while distracted.

It takes the average person 5 seconds to look down at a text message and then to look back to the road. At 55 MPH, the car would have traveled nearly the length of a football field without a cognizant operator.

I never understand why people insist on sending text after text when I do not respond. Do you really think that your insignificant message is more important to me than my life?

I have news for you. It isn’t.

Problem is that they are not only risking their lives, but the lives of others as well. Thanks so much.

Fred...

And many have multiple conversations going on. Try wrapping your head around THAT! THX.

Its seems nuts. There isn't any text that is important in my world. If its important call and I will pull over. Its a PHONE not a Typewriter.

I love coffee & real estate. I am out of coffee!

Good post. I got the impatient "TALK TO ME" text yesterday and I thought I was going to pop my lid. So I called him back. Right away. When he couldn't hear me at all because of where I was, and the whole reason I didn't call back in the first place... he felt dumb.

The Internet and Cell phones have changed our generation. We will never be the same. It's not all good. Some day they will make cars so the texting won't work while you are driving. If you get in a horrible accident caused you the driver the cops get your cell phone records for texting times for investigation I have heard.

Though the message may not be insignificant, if I don't respond immediately, I may be driving or in a meeting.  It is very discourteous to text while in a meeting as talking on the phone.  99.999% of any communication can wait until either the task of driving is complete or the meeting is over.  Otherwise, we would have never survived long enough to develop cell phone technology much less smart phones.  Ten text messages will have no more affect than one text.  Be patient, I'll respond as soon as practical and practicable.

Amen!  I see people weaving all over the road and a few years ago would have though they were drunk.  Now, I assume it is texting which it usually is.

Richard, here in Maryland, we are not allowed to text and drive. Just yesterday, our legislators added that even talking with the phone up to your ear (not hands free - that is OK) is a primary offense (it used to be secondary.)

I am glad our state is taking steps to try to reduce distracted driving. I hope yours does, too.

As sad as it is, the current AT&T campaign of broken hearted parents telling about their lost children's last text that cost their lives seems an effective one.  I wish people of all ages would take it to heart.

California has strict laws to punish anyone texting and driving.  In fact, a guy who was staring at his smartphone with a mapping program loaded was busted under the law.  Drivers need to keep their eyes on the road.

Richard, I couldn't agree with you more! It makes me crazy to see people playing with their phones while driving. Besides the fact that it's illegal.

It is impossible to convince many people, especially younger ones, that it is extremely dangerous.  Young people say "I am no dummy, I only do it on a clear road with no traffic" or "I only do it at stop lights" etc.  The only solution is to make it a serious offence to operate a phone or even hold it in your hand while driving.

Great post; we have become a distracted nation, in general, and this is one more example of "I have to do this now" when in reality, we don't.
