April is Volunteerism Month in Gaithersburg
The City of Gaithersburg, Maryland has declared April as Volunteerism Month. Mayor Sidney Katz is encouraging every resident to step up and share their talents with the community. We are fortunate to live in a community that celebrates the hard work and dedication of hundreds of volunteers that make a difference in the quality of life in our community.
The following is from the official City of Gaithersburg notice:
“Volunteers are the backbone of our community,” said Gaithersburg Mayor Sidney Katz. “They supplement and enhance the work of nonprofit organizations, schools and City staff, ultimately adding to the quality of life in Gaithersburg and setting an example for future generations.”
The proclamation highlights just a few of the impressive statistics about volunteerism in Gaithersburg. For example, more than 300 middle and high school volunteers logged in excess of 6,000 volunteer hours last year, working with such projects as the Gaithersburg Community Soup Kitchen, tree plantings, Asbury’s Beloved Community Initiative, and many more.
Additionally, more than 350 people volunteer as coaches for City sports programs, there are more than 75 instructors and office assistants volunteering at the Gaithersburg Upcounty Senior Center, more than 250 people volunteer each year for the Holiday Giving Program & the Gaithersburg Book Festival, and there are currently 130 volunteers serving on City boards, commissions and advisory committees.
