Top 10 Tools Every Realtor Should Keep in the Trunk of Their Car--Reprise

This is just an epilogue to my earlier post and the many wonderful suggestions other AR folks have given for things you should keep in your car at all times.

Today on Home Tour (you know the caravan thing where the agents in an office collect in cars and drive to 6 or 7 recent listings for their office) we had just finished viewing a home and the listing agent was locking up.  As she pulled the front door closed, the ENTIRE molding strip and the wood behind it ripped off pulling the deadbolt and part of the latch (door jam) along with it!

Unfortunately, I wasn't driving today and no one else had a toolkit in their trunk!  After pounding on the molding with our fists while nails were falling out of the boards and the wood was becoming even more splintered we gave up. Best we could do was to chain the door from the inside (luckily the chain was still attached) and go out the back door (turns out the tenant had "fixed" the lock the day before).

Moral of the story. . .a tool chest and set of tools are integral to real estate.  For more ideas check out my earlier post: Top 10 Tools Every Realtor Should Keep in the Trunk of Their Car.

I enjoyed both articles.

I have a realtor box (milk crate) in my car, included are blank listing and sales contracts (I've used these on more than one occasion) along with addenda.  Electric ties, rider clips and name riders.  Personal brochures are key too.  So many things I could list here.

I have a universal screw driver set, tape measure, box cutter, zip ties, but I need a hammer. It pays to be prepared. But so lucky my company doesnt do caravans I hated those and it was such a waste of time.

What about a big flashlight? I always use mine, plus it is big enough to hit someone or some dog with. You never know!

I drive a Hummer now but when I didn't, I carried cans of fix a flat in case I ran over nails on job sites.........

June -- I usually have directional signs and open house signs in my trunk as well.

Heather -- I like the caravans because you get a lot of good advice from other agents and can use their comments to convince a seller they need to lower the asking price. . .it's also a great tool in listing presentations to say 10-15 agents from your office will tour their home.

Dennis -- After fumbling with lockboxes, keys and all the other junk I carry to the door, I got the kind of flashlight that you can prop up and point at something. . .never thought of clubbing a dog with one (fortunately have never had to)!

Kevin & Monica -- you're welcome, glad you enjoyed the suggestions.

Julie -- great idea.  My brother, a former Realtor, picked me up at the airport once and had "fix-a-flat" in his trunk because his one tire kept going flat on him. . .he got a big kick of me sitting on my suitcases in the middle of the airport lot while he fixed his flat and charged his battery with a small generator (another good idea for your trunk).

I have jumper cables because one time my buyers left their lights on and their very old battery died and thank the lord I could help them get the car started.  I also have a female (pink) tool kit with assorted tools in it.  I also have zip ties just in case I drive by one of my listings and my name rider is hanging.

Teri- Just goes to show..keep that tool box handy. LOL

Debbie -- jumper cables or the little battery generator are definitely a must. . .love the pink toolkit!  I also keep the zip ties for sign riders (and a scissors for cutting them off).

Vanessa -- how right you are. . .never know when you're gonna need it!

Dang!  I'm going to Sears tomorrow and  buying a pink tool kit!  Do they sell ping batery generators?

My tools are similar to Heather's above with a Sharpie Marker added in...A hammer would be helpful. In MN we always carry an ice scraper/brush and gloves too....Ok we don't need them April through October but they sometimes stay in the back of my car all year round. :)

Good list, Terri, but what a nightmare about the molding coming off the door. That's a $10,000 price reduction right there!  :-)

I;m not sure about #8 on the list.  I usually don't wear my heals out on showings :-)  although I have trekked though mud and snow before.

Pat -- Just think how co-ordinated you can be with a pink battery generator too!

Jeff -- Thanks for the kudos. . .glad you enjoyed the list.

Teri -- The ice scraper and snow brush are great additions, and if you have room, add a broom.  A spare set of gloves is a super idea. . .I'm always forgetting mine.

Ken -- Yes, it was quite a nightmare, but the L.A. was relieved it hadn't happened during a showing.  So, where do you wear your heels?  Just kidding. . .
