An Evening At McMenamins At Edgefield
I've been living in the Portland Metro area since 2000 and I've yet to check out McMenamins at Edgefield. Oh..I've been to several other like Kennedy School In NE Portland, The Grand Lodge in Forest Grove and even stayed at Old St. Francis School in Bend, Oregon..and they all are very cool and unique.
The McMenamin Brothers offer a fun and unique experience when you meander the grounds of Edgefield. Originally the Multnomah County Poor Farm built in 1911 this 74 acre parcel located in Troutdale, Oregon boasts a brewery, winery, golf course, a salt water outdoor pool and a movie theatre. In the summer they also get some big ticket names for their concert on the lawn series like Tony Bennett, The Steve Miller Band, Local Pink Martini's, and Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion Radio Romance Tour.
So...when good friends that grew up in the Troutdale area wanted to show us around, we took them up on it. The evening we went was very summer like weather with the temps rising to a glorious high 70's and the sunshine warm enough to heat the skin. Needless to say the place was hopping!
We meandered around until we passed the winery and being a bit parched, we all decided to buy a bottle of their red and split it. You can walk the grounds sipping your drink of choice..nice! Since one friend was looking for a nice local brew, we headed over the Jerry's Ice House...a Grateful Dead inspired room only to find a line out the door of likeminded folks. No problem..plenty of places to slake ones thirst so off we went past the golf course to The Little Red Shed to grab a brew and hang at one of the picnic tables around the firepit. The Little Red shed by the way...used to serve as the poort farms incinerator back in the day. Now..a nice little hidaway tap and cigar room.
After our casual dinner in the Power Station Pub (since the outdoor restaurant had over an hours wait! ) we took a nice stroll to check out the outdoor pool and another form of pool in the huge Billiard room. The air was warm, the sky was beautiful and it was just a perfect evening with friends at McMenamins Edgefield!
These next few pictures are interesting to me. I had been shooting pics throughout the evening and something about the sky backlit behind the trees just struck me as really pretty so of course I took a picture. When looking in my camera at the photo, it looked like the moon was out. Now..I enjoyed some wine, but looked up at the sky and sure enough...no moon. Upon closer look there are lots of what I've come to learn might be "Orbs". Not knowing what orbs were other than round thingys, I googled them and apparently they are beleived to be energy from those that have passed. In looking into it further it seems that McMenamins at Edgefield has been known for being haunted......so...you tell me? Orbs of spiritual nature...or dust particles in the air caught by the flash? Either way, I thought the placement of whatever it was looked pretty darn cool in the first cropped photo, but you can easily see all the other orbs in the second uncropped photo.
