The New Hampshire Disaster Animal Response Team (NHDART) is a new statewide network of animal advocacy agencies, emergency management personnel and volunteers who are ready to help evacuate and care for animals (from pets to exotic animals) if a disaster or a statewide or regional emergency is declared.

NHDART comes under the N.H. Department of Agriculture and N.H. Homeland Security and Emergency Management.  In the past couple of years, New Hampshire has had unprecedented flooding in various parts of the states.  It is important that our pets and other animals are included in disaster planning.

The organization was formed as a result of the passage of the federal Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act of 2006.  States that create Disaster Animal Response Teams become illegible for FEMA funding.

NHDART will work with existing state and federal emergency management agencies.  It also will work in conjunction with the New Hampshire humane societies and shelters to provide shelter and protection for animals during an emergency.

During the past few years, New Hampshire has experienced unprecedented flooding.  While the emergency response has been very good, there were virtually no resources for our pets and animals.  Our pets are an important part of our families and NHDART is a welcome addition to New Hampshire's Emergency Prepardness Network.

NHDART is looking for volunteers and donations.  To find out how you can help, go to NHDART.

Joan - That is a great idea.  A  Statewide safety net make sense.  Pets means so much to the owners. I remember bad the  the situation was in Louisiana during Katrina.

Vickie~  Our pets are so important in our lives and in our families lives.  Often flood victims had no where to turn when they were forced to leave their homes.  Now, their pets will be safe.

Jennifer~  It was due to the problems with the Katrina situation that the federal program came about.  I know a lot of pets without homes were brought to New Hampshire and many people tried to adopt them.  Now, there is a mechanism to keep these pets and other animals safe until their families can reunite.

Joan  I am indirectly a part of this group.  The group I am an advisor to is New England Pet Partners -- we have some teams of dogs and humans who participate in rescue work!

I wish CT had something like this (or maybe we do and I don't know it).  They always say if there is an evacuation pets cannot be taken to shelters-forget that!  If they can't go I'm staying put.  It doesn't do animals any good to be locked inside an empty house for days/weeks nor is it safe to turn them loose.

I haven't heard of this and I am going to check to see if we are set up with something like this. I think this is a great idea as I feel my pets are just as much of my family as my kids sometimes. (There are days, I may trade the pets for the kids - lol)

Todd -- since I wrote this blog, it certainly seems that people are so glad to know if we experience a natural disaster, they will know there is a resource in place.  I also know a couple of people who think a swap of the pets for the kids may be a good short term remedy (lol)!
