The New Hampshire Disaster Animal Response Team (NHDART) is a new statewide network of animal advocacy agencies, emergency management personnel and volunteers who are ready to help evacuate and care for animals (from pets to exotic animals) if a disaster or a statewide or regional emergency is declared.
NHDART comes under the N.H. Department of Agriculture and N.H. Homeland Security and Emergency Management. In the past couple of years, New Hampshire has had unprecedented flooding in various parts of the states. It is important that our pets and other animals are included in disaster planning.
The organization was formed as a result of the passage of the federal Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act of 2006. States that create Disaster Animal Response Teams become illegible for FEMA funding.
NHDART will work with existing state and federal emergency management agencies. It also will work in conjunction with the New Hampshire humane societies and shelters to provide shelter and protection for animals during an emergency.
During the past few years, New Hampshire has experienced unprecedented flooding. While the emergency response has been very good, there were virtually no resources for our pets and animals. Our pets are an important part of our families and NHDART is a welcome addition to New Hampshire's Emergency Prepardness Network.
NHDART is looking for volunteers and donations. To find out how you can help, go to NHDART.
