"Rats are both charming and aggressive. They appear calm and well balanced on the surface, but underneath, they are restless and a little nervous. Rats are compatible, hard working, and they know how to hang on to a penny. They are never without admirers. They are very appealing. They have a bright and happy personality, and this keeps them busy socially. They love parties and other large gatherings. They like belonging to exclusive clubs and will often have a close circle of fellow conspirators. They like involvement and are very outgoing. Rats cherish friends and loved ones. For this reason, they often get entangled with others' problems and lives."

If you are not a rat according to the Chinese Zodiac what are you? What does it say that means about you? I was born in the year of the dog. On the Chinese Zodiac site find the year you were born and click on the icon to the left.

Thanks Charlie. I thought the Google thing with the rats was adorable. I hate rats.   I am always interested to see what Google does for each  holiday.  You know there's an archive with all of them on Google and they warn you not to "borrow" them... people do "borrow" the holiday logos because some of them are so much fun...but Google protects their TM and content.

Maureen, I am a rat. Not a four leg one. According to the description above I fit the description to a tee, on all accounts.

A dog is not a bad thing Neal

from the Chinese Zodiac site:

"Dogs are honest, straightforward, and friendly. They are extremely protective of themselves and their loved ones. With a passion for fair play and justice, they never fail to rescue you time after time. They may rant and rave, but they never rest until they right the wrong. They are true humanitarians and suffer with the world. In spite of their concern for others, social graces and fancy parties do not impress them. Having sharp eyes, they will see through people's motives."

Thanks Frank...  for admitting to being a rat.

Okay I'm confused...those little chinese table placemats just list the year so based on that I'm a rat, however I was born before Jan 16 1972, so what does that make me?

If they just tell you 1972 was the year of the Rat they are not taking YOU into consideration if you were born in January 1972 before the 16th.

Jan.16,1972 to Feb.02,1973

I believe last year was the year of the pig...  a wonderful sign...

Maureen:

Nice localism post for the Chinese New Year. There are a bunch of celebrations going on here in San Diego too, and a Feng Shui friend of mine is teaching some special classes.

Does this mean I'm half pig half rat? :) I'm not feeling the pig sign though, can I just be a rat instead?

Hi Maureen~ I have to say, I am a rat according to the Chinese Horoscope, and the description somewhat matches me, but not completely. Ok, probably more so than I would like to admit...

"Rats are both charming and aggressive. They appear calm and well balanced on the surface, but underneath, they are restless and a little  (lot) nervous. Jeff I was surprised by the video on Youtube being Columbus, it must have been last weekend because it says i it is 2008.  I did a post a few weeks back about Feng Shui and Chinese New Year on one of my blogs to try to see if I heard from any local  Feng Shui people...  not a peep.  Oh well...

I don't know Pam... which end would be rat and which would be pig... I guess I like both ends of a pig better... cute little snout, curly tail.  I think of cartoonish pigs... all pink and pretty... or like Babe.  Rat's I have a harder time with.  I have blog entries going back two years about Chinese New Year... pig images... dog images in 4704...  I did not even look for rat images... the rat in Ratatouille was cute.... the rats on Google today are cute...  but I am not partial to rats.  I'd go for Pig if it was me...

No disrespect to the rats among us... but I hate rodents.

it will be an auspicious year for you Allison!

that's the word a Columbus blogger who is a rat used.  or who was born in the year of the rat...   funny what you crossed out.

2011 is the year of the hare, isn't it?  last year was a good year for rabbits?

I forget with Firefox it recovers pages... I was commenting and got kicked off... signed on later on IE and responded above... did not remember what I was going to write.

Allison that's funny.  I like the description of dogs  usually... I really did not read the whole thing on this one but for years I had a thing about being a dog on my website...

LY was a good year for rabbits?  Or Hares (bigger?  longer ears?) Last year (4705) was the year of the pig wasn't it? Good year for rabbits?  2011 will be the year of the Hare I believe.  I have a blog that says Rabbit, Rabbit , Rabbit the first of every month for good luck (not that I believe this stuff mind you...) and I wish next year was the year of the Hare.  Thanks for the comment Linda.

I share your feelings about rodents, despite being born as a rat, I would rather see *almost* any other animal than a rat (maybe not a snake). Married a dog, I guess that would be my favorite...

My bad for some reason I thought last year was the rabbit but you are right it was the pig and 2011 will be the year of the hare.

I hate snakes too... is that one of the signs of the Chinese Zodiac?

rats... mice, moles, voles.... squirrels if they get too close... you just see rodents more than snakes... I saw a rat in a residential area in Metro Detroit  last summer and I just have to think about it to gross myself out...  I know they are everywhere (local)  but I don't see them.

I had a great teacher in high school for Russian History who talked about rats.  It was related to Russian History  because of the bubonic plague which was passed on by fleas (?)  on rats?...  or by the rats themselves?  something like that.  My sister had taken the class before me and talked about Mr. Kazmarek and the rats...  it was a great story.

Linda you have an auspicious year to look forward to!  And a great sign unlike some... that come with negative connotations at least here.  Rabbits are cute. Actually I am scared of rabbit.  Are they rodents?  I got bit by a rabbit as a kid but I saw a neighbor bit worse, sticking his fingers in the rabbit cage. Other kids were sticking carrots in.  Lots of blood and screaming... I am scarred for life... terrified by rabbits.

The snake is one of the zodiac, but I am not sure when the next one is coming up. The Year of the Snake is in between the Dragon and the Horse.

Maureen

If I go back a couple years earlier with a birth date, what does that do for me?

If I could I would have taught anything, including rats to shovel snow yesterday.

 Rooster .... all true?

The Chinese Zodiac  description of the Rooster starts out:

"Roosters are the most eccentric of the Chinese zodiac. They are full of dreams and romantic ideas. They are colorful and attractive, radiant and dashing, and they are quite proud of themselves. Roosters are organized, precise, and their sharp eyes seek out fine details in everything. They are perfectionists and leave no room for human error. To Roosters, a difficult task is a challenge. They dearly love starting controversies. Roosters express themselves very well both in writing and speech. They are knowledgeable in most subjects you wish to discuss. When you challenge them you must be prepared for a long fight. Their stamina is amazing and they win their point at all costs. Even when they are wrong, they will still be right in one way or another! "

Thanks Sally.  are there Chinese New Year celebrations in Hawaii?

I am a Monkey.  My son came home from school today (4th grade) with the whole chart and was eager to find out what each person in our family was.  I thought it was really cool that they expose the kids to other cultures like this.  And I fit the description of the monkey almost perfectly!

Thanks for sharing!

Hi Maureen - I really hated to move my blog off of the main site, www.jalone.com, but having a blog on a true blog platform really has it's advantages (I now just need to spend time understanding the full capabilites of wordpress!) and it makes posting so much easier.  I do my posts on MS Word and just click on publish....all done, photos and all.

Maureen,

I was born in 1960, so yeah, I am a rat - my wife thinks I am of the cuter type of rat: one who takes out the garbage instead of rooting through it.

I really miss Columbus - I went to Whetstone high school there and my first "real" job was selling Cokes to students in the student seating block at OSU during the games.

GO BUCKEYES!

Steve
