Clutter will Scare the Buyers Off

Clean out the Excess Clutter by Sandy Shores Broker AssociateThe National Association of Realtors conducted a study to find out why houses don't sell. Well, not surprisingly, price topped the list. An overpriced listing will sit on the market for months, and sometimes even years, without selling, and often without ever receiving an offer.

The study went on to indicate the second reason a house doesn't sell is because it's not ready to be put on the market. The attention to the small details has been overlooked. The house hasn't been cleaned and cleared of clutter.

So, before the for sale sign goes up a good cleaning from top to bottom is ideal. Neutral paint and wall coverings appeal to a wider variety of buyers. And, clearing out the excess clutter, knick knacks and furniture help to show off the beautiful features of the property. If a buyer can't see past the furnishings and the mess, the buyer will either make a low ball offer, or the buyer will turn away and never take a second look at this property.

FOOTNOTE: This is an extreme example of clutter. This was a house I showed to a buyer that was filled will garbage. At one time it had been a gorgeous house. It was situated in a well appointed neighborhood. It was a real shame to see it in this condition.

Sandy,  Isn't it a pity what people can do to a property.  There are so many underlying reasons why a seller either can't or won't prepare their property for sale.  I'm sure there is a sad story behind the mess in that room.

If you were trying to sell a car would you leave empty Coke cans and candy wrappers etc in it?  Heck no, you would clean that sucker up.  I don't know why some home sellers don't see the logic in decluttering.

Sandy, what you said is so true and if by chance the clutter does not scare buyers away, the clutter will certainly result in the buyers offering less.

Marge, So true, there is an underlying story that probably goes with every story of clutter. It's a Realtors job to let the seller know that a forklift needs to be brought in to clear the mess out BEFORE the for sale sign hits the front yard.

Ann, I just think some people may not be willing to be in the effort it takes to get the property ready to sell.  If they're not in it for the long haul, the house isn't going to sell.

Kathy, Point well taken, a home like this one will receive offers for tens of thousands less than the house could potentially get if cleaned up.

Decluttering just gives off that new vibe in my opinion. When looking at a new space you want to see a clean slate as opposed to seeing someone elses home.

Sandy, I had a tenant like that where all the garbage was neatly in black plastic trash bags with a narrow pathway from the door to the mattress in her bedroom, about a years worth.  Needless to say there were psychological issues at work and we got her help.
