A few weeks ago, I posted a blog called "Chicken Paws."  It was about how I'd found chicken feet at the local dogSuper Wal-Mart and thought my dogs might enjoy them. I'd been considering putting the pups on a BARF diet (Bones & Raw Food) for many reasons, not the least of which was to reduce the poop-load in my new, tiny back yard!

You can read more about BARF here.

Well, we've been BARFing for a few weeks now and it's going well! My dachshund's skin problems are all but gone, the dogs all seem healthier and more energetic and I think the poop-factor is much improved (hard to tell, though with all the snow). And of course, the dogs LOVE their new diet.

I've been feeding them mostly chicken, but am worried because Ziggers has been wolfing down her chicken wings whole. Doesn't seem to bother her, but I'm a nervous mom.  So I read that you can buy a meat grinder and grind up the meat, making it safer, but... I'm not in the meat grinding business and don't really wanna be. What to do, what to do?

So today, I happened to drive by a little shop in Wheat Ridge called "Rocky Mountain Meats." Hmmmm... I wonder if they could grind some meat up for me?

Well, apparently, Rocky Mountain Meats is THE place for BARFers! As soon as I uttered the words Dog Food, the owner showed me an entire freezer full of ground up meat especially for dogs! Bones and all!

Cost? Like... $1.29/pound! You can get Wild Game or a Chicken/Turkey mix; I bought some of each. I'll let you know how it goes over.

I've been buying pre-made raw for my guys -- expensive, but I just love the convenience.  And, you will love the reduced poop factor!

Jeannie - do you do veggies, too? My guys get a banana first thing in the morning, but otherwise, I haven't quite figured out the veggie process... guess I shouldn't have given away my juicer when I moved...

I had never heard of BARF outside of the hospitals and bars, interesting option. I think I will look for one in my area.

Take care!

Jennifer, my dogs love bananas too. As soon as they see me grab one I become the sole focus of their attention. But because of skin allergies they are on a dry food diet, Wellness Lamb Super5Mix, and it has worked wonders. So I'll not risk changing now. But it's good to learn about alternative diets. Thank you for sharing the information.

Jennifer, my dogs LOVE bananas!  And, yes I do veggies too.  Mainly green beans and carrots (they get raw baby carrots for treats during the day, daily), or really whatever I happend to be making for the family they get a little bit of it, too -- including those frozen broccoli and cauliflower medleys from Green Giant.

But, the raw prepared food that I buy already has veggies in it, so whatever i give them is only when I've needed to get weight off of them.  I usually buy Nature's Variety http://www.naturesvariety.com/  frozen raw that comes in medallion sized pieces, and defrost what I need.  It's made of organic meats, ground bones and veggis.  When I don't have time for the raw, I feed them grain-free kibble.  The only grain they get is if I run out of grain-free biscuits and purchase something at the supermarket.  When all of the tainted pet food scare was going around, I was completely calm because I knew that they don't eat any grain so they were safe.  I have pics of them on some of my blog posts if you want to see what they look like.  Very healthy little pups!

I just checked out the poop situation in the back yard and WOW! What a difference! This is cool! I found a store just a few blocks from my house that sells Nature's Variety; will check that out today.

How do your dogs get grains and fruits and veggie?  Even wild canines graze and eat the stomach contents of their kill.

Hi Jennifer - well, we're working on that. I give them a banana every day and might add a few more fruits, although they don't need much. Last night I lightly steamed a bunch of veggies and then blended them with a cooked sweet potato - they LOVED it. I don't think they need grains - at least as far as I can tell from my research.

I just purchased some frozen raw food from Nature's Variety that does include fruits & veggies...

Jennifer- Thanks for the great information. I'm not sure at this point that I'll go all natural, but I will be stopping by the meat company to pick up some BARF for training treats.

We've our 2 terriers raw for nearly 4 years now. Natures Variety is terrific, and a tad pricey. The dogs love the stuff and your right, so does my back yard! Don't think I could go back to any other foods. Thanks for getting the word out there!!

My dogs are doing great too. Haven't picked up the yard once since I moved in, but the snow kinda helps that, too. But I agree, I can't imagine going back to kibble. I have half a bag of organic kibble, but when I run out of BARF stuff, I'll run out and get more rather than feed them the dry stuff.

Jennifer, I used a great BARF company called Nature's Menu - my Golden Retriever absolutely loved the food, and it stopped really bad allergies.  It can be shipped frozen, thaw as you need. Here's the website address  www.naturesmenu.com

Good luck to you!

I have just moved to Castle Rock, CO from So. California where we had formed the largest BARFing Co-op in the U.S.

Check out www.socalfarf.com and you will find not only every imagineable product that can be fed to your pets, but they have links to information on how to make up the diet on your own, etc. When I left, BARFers from other areas (Fresno, Phoenix, Washington, etc.) were sending refrigerated trucks once a month to pick up orders for their members!

I am hoping to be able to find adequate product for my two Old English Sheepdogs here.

Hello Everyone--I am calling Rocky Mtn Meats back to see if they grind it up smaller for my IGs.  Do you know of a place that sells meat pulverized/ground to 1/8"?  Thanks
