History of Patriot's Day & the Boston Marathon 

Patriot's Day is a Massachusetts holiday celebrated on the 3rd Monday of every April in honor of the Battles of Lexington and Concord. They were the first battles of the Revolutionary War, fought on April 19, 1775 1904 Boston Marathon

  • The Boston Marathon is held on the same day 
  • The Boston Marathon, which began in 1897, is the worlds oldest annual marathon
  • It began with only 18 participants, but there are now over 20,000 runners each year from all over the world 
  • In 1996 the Boston Marathon set the record for the World's Largest Marathon, with over 38,000 participants

Boston Marathon Scandal

  • In 1980, after Rosie Ruiz was the first woman to cross the finish line, it was determined that she had only entered the race a mile before the finish line. 

    • Her time would have been the fastest female time in the history of the Boston Marathon 
    • Other marathon runners noticed that she did not remember things about the marathon that everyone else knew
    • Her heart rate was much higher than most other female runners 
    • 2 Harvard students reported seeing her burst out of the crowd of spectators
