National Park Week April 20-28, 2013

National Park Week April 20-28, 2013

Next Week is National Park Week April 20-28, 2013

Did you know that National Park Week is April 20-28, 2013?

Did you know that there are 401 national parks? That they include seashores, battlefields, historic homes, archeological sites, and spectacular natural areas?

Did you know there is at least one national park in every state?

Did you know that 99 percent of counties in America have recreational facilities such as playgrounds and trails funded by the National Park Service's Land & Water Conservation Fund?

So, if you are looking for something fun and fantastic to do with family and friends, head out to America's national parks where millions of stars light up the dark night sky, deer and antelope (and a few other critters!) play on the wide open range, and history is an unbelievable experience and it is all FREE.

The National Park Service is proud to once again present National Park Week, a presidentially proclaimed celebration of our national heritage.

You can plan your visit by what you want to do, or where you want to go ... or you can browse the National Park website event calendar and check out the special programs offered next week.  From Monday through Friday, April 22 to 26, every national park will have FREE admission!

On April 20, National Junior Ranger Day, parks will invite young visitors to "explore, learn, protect" and be sworn in as Junior Rangers. April 27 is Volunteer Day, so if you want to roll up your sleeves and pitch in with a project, look for a park where you can help out.

Also, don't forget to check out www.nationalparkweek.org. There you can share your national park photos, videos, and tips. While you're there, learn all about the ways you can help support your national parks all year round.

Hope you get the chance to stop in at one of your national parks during National Park Week!  And don’t forget it is FREE next week.

National Parks Week provides an opportunity to become reacquainted with one of our great parks, or to explore one not visited before.  A few years ago, I revisted Yosemite after an almost 2 decade absence.  It was like seeing it for the first time all over again!

Hi Endre,

When I was younger, my parents always liked to drive across county to bases and on vacations and we always went by the parks. I am not sure I have been to Yosemite as I would remember going through the redwood trees. I have been to Denali Park in Alaska twice and it is spectacular.

Wonder how much acreage is covered? I know out west that huge chunks of the country are national parks. Not so much on the east coast. There are some big parks, but nothing like in the west.

Hi Than,

I think the east coast was already populated when the presidents designated the parks so many were in untouched areas to  be preserved for eternity. But there are national parks in every state but size is probably the big difference.
