Save Energy: Adjust Your Air Vents For Summer

Energy Saving Tip For Your HomeAs the weather warms up and air conditioners start to get turned on don’t forget to adjust your air vents. Basements are already cool in the summer so there’s no need to leave the vents open and waste conditioned air. Close the vents so that the air goes where it’s needed most. Some homes don’t need the main level vents open either, closing them will direct more cool air upstairs which often gets hot during the summer.

In addition to keeping the temperature more balanced in your home adjusting the air vents for summer will also help lower your air conditioning bill. If your home has ceiling fans keeping them on at a low speed will help circulate air and keep your house at a balanced temperature too.

Hi! Oh no! I better check the info I've been given in the past!

It could be different regionally and depending on the system(s) you run and I may have gotten bad info, but I've been told by local HVAC pros to never 100% close and cutoff air to any area of a property. I don't recall the reason why they want continual air flow throughout the entire ventilation system, only using "cutoff" as a one day or temporary thing or close down a little, not a lot, but I have been told complete closure is bad for the system... I will ask them again why so the post (or my comment) can be accurate.

Good morning Amanda -

A good reminder and tip to Save Energy by simply Adjusting Your Air Vents For Summer.  Odd as it sounds we only have to run our AC about 3 or 4 weeks a year.  Not sure if it's such low humidity, the vaulted ceilings, tile flooring and roofs that make the difference but it really saves on the utility bill by having the thermostat on the off position.

Good tip, Alexandra.  I will remember to do that in June when summer gets here.  Our furnace is still running especially at night. (Erie, PA)

Amanda,

This is a great energy saving tip that many people forget. For many, they are lucky enough to remember to change their air filters.

Suggested because you are such an astute and wonderful REALTOR®.

Hi Richie - I've forgotten to do it quite a few times and know I wasted a lot of cold air too!

Elite Homes- You're welcome! Every bit of savings helps.

Kristen- I'd be interested to hear what they say. I've been told for years that this is the best way to keep the house a balanced temp (opposite for winter) some air will of course still come out of the vents but, it helps push the cool air up to the third level if you have one.

John- that's awesome! The humidity is horrible here in the summer. I've already had the air on a few times. Very jealous you can get by without it!

Mary- Even if it's just a slight bit north the temps really change! We've already had 90's here.

Michael- There sure are! They vary by area too I would imagine.

Patricia- I have to mark the filter change on the calendar :) Thank you!
