The Hunt Is on:  I Hear Him, but I Can't Find Him

WoodpeckerFor several days I have heard the loud flicker-like cuk, cuk, cuk, cuk, rising & falling in volume and pitch in the woods near my house.

Camera and binoculars in hand but I can't find the PILEATED WOODPECKER

My trusted bird books tell me that the Pileated Woodpecker is rather shy and not easily spotted, but I am determined.  I know where he has been as he drills large rectangular holes instead of round holes like the smaller woodpeckers.

So I had to resort to iClipArt for this image.

Hi Mary, we have them here in our woods and I have been very luck to get great photos twice and have posted on the pileated woodpecker...I was so close to one it was truly amazing as I was clicking the camera he was pecking away.

Beautiful when you finally spot him Mary, good luck. We have an elusive hawk that let's us see him, but not photograph him. Yesterday he had the nerve to do a fly by right in front of us! Massive bird.

Will, if you were back here in PA we could walk in the woods together.  I did not hear him this morning, but I think the birds are hunkered down because a storm is coming.  Have good day in Colorado.

Rebecca, that must have been awesome.  Sorry I missed your photos of Pileated Woodpecker.  I did see him years ago before I carried my camera and before ActiveRain.  With diligence and patience I will find him again.  Enjoy the day in West Virginia.

Al & Peggy, I love seeing the hawks, too.  Sometimes they swoop down on our bird feeders for a quick bite.  So fast and furious. Have a great day in Brampton.

Best of luck catching a glimpse of the woodpecker Mary. It's a bit like having a cricket in the house. They stop chirping when you start looking.

Malcolm,  that is how it feels, but I will keep my eyes and ears open.

Thanks, Hannah.  I am on a mission.

Patricia,  thanks for your vote of confidence. Today's weather was not conducive to man or beast so not a creature was stirring outside certainly not me.  Rain, wind and drastic temperature drop.  Brr!!

Bob, one to these days I will find him and he will be caught on camera.  Then he can keep cuk-cuk-cuk-ing searching for bugsin dead/dying trees.

THANKS EVERYONE FOR VISTING TODAY.

Those woodpeckers can be annoying and elusive. You just keep watching and you will catch him.

Thanks, Debbie.  Yes, woodpeckers can be rather noisy, but they only make holes in dying trees not healthy ones.  I haven't heard him for a few days.  Perhaps because we have had stormy weather.

Toni, seeing two of these big birds would be a coup.  I will keep my eyes open when I hear him.  Thanks for the tip.

Kasey, No, not yet.  Bad weather has kept all of us under cover so to speak.  Tomorrow is another day.  I will do my best to capture him/her on camera.
