I Wasn't The First One She Called But I Was The First Who Answered My Phone

Reblogger
Real Estate Agent with LAER Realty Partners

Once upon a time, I would respond to most 'unknown' callers - and block them if they were spam (so as to work efficiently)!

Then THEY taught me blocking of my time as a basic rule for time management. The next rule was - to respond to calls only between certain hours. To an extent that my voice message also should say that 'I am busy prospecting!'

Hmmmm....so it seems if I follow all these rules, I will never get such referrals.

Who is right?

The training I received or Martha Brown? (she picked up the phone - read her story in this re-blog).

I Wasn't The First One She Called But I Was The First Who Answered My Phone

answer phoneIt was around 3:30 pm. I was busy taking care of business when my phone rang. It was a long istance number. Oh yuk, probably a telemarketer wanting me to buy the latest and greatest in lead generating. I hesitated answering. But then I remembered the deal I made with myself earlier this year. Answer ALL calls becuase you just never know.

Good afternoon this is Martha. On the other end was an agent from Illinois who had a dear friend she wanted to refer to buy a home in Crofton. No it was not a telemarketer at all.

As we spoke for a bit she told me I wasn't the first one she called but I was the first who answered my phone. This CRS agent was appalled at how many did NOT answer. Don't agents answer their phones when they ring?

Such a simple thing....answering my phone. But like many I too hesitated when seeing that long distance number. So glad I made that deal with myself earlier this year. After all not all people want to leave a message. They instead put value in the small gesture of answering a phone call.

I wasn't The first One She Called But I Was The First Who Answered My Phone.
And because I did I have a new buyer to help find that special home.

Funny how answering the phone works. Many times I get Oh you answered your phone.

Thank you for re-blogging Martha's post Praful. I am one of those who screen long distance callers, since the largest percentage are telemarketers, but perhaps now, I will begin answer all calls once again.  You never know.

I will answer my phone - office # rings to my cel # - AND if I do not, my voicemail messages are transcribed.  If someone does not leave me a voicemail message if I do not answer my phone, they are probably not a good fit for my property management services - I can text and e-mail and if they don't leave me a message at FIRST CONTACT, they are wasting both of our times by not respecting my business...NOW, if they did not get a RETURN CALL from their voicemail message within a short amount of time, THAT would be a RED FLAG....

Praful, I'll answer the phone when at all possible (assuming I'm not already with a client), even return missed calls that didn't leave a message (just in case).  If I find out they're spammers, I'll make the # with their name so I know next time I can ignore it.  Bill
