Michaelangelo's guide to Greatness

By
Real Estate Agent with YourStories Realty Group MA# 9517963

Michaelangelo's DavidMichelangelo's's guide to Greatness fits not only his brilliance as an artist and inventor, but the lessons have implications for the real estate industry and for life.  Standing before the beautiful marble sculpture of David Michelangelo was asked, "How can you look at a huge piece of raw marble and see David within?"  Michelangelo answered immediately, First I know there is a thing of beauty locked inside this block of stone, then I go about chipping away at everything that isn't David and I am left with beauty.  I first heard this story in college many years ago and I have thought of it often.  So much of life is like a huge block of raw marble and we need to look at our block and believe there is a thing of beauty inside.

Once our mindset is right and our belief is strong then all we have to do is begin chipping away at everything that does not belong there.  As a professional Realtor® each and every morning I get out of bed believing I can make my clients life better. Each day I know if I chip away at finding the right Buyer, finding the right lender, finding the right contractor, appraiser, inspector, Seller...I can create a thing of beauty for my clients.

A life worth living is shaped by our beliefs and our focus.  The work of real estate, like the work of creating great art is simple--just chip away at everything that does not belong, but that does not mean it is easy.  Blisters can be formed, nails are broken, chips fly where they may but in the end if your belief and your skills and techniques come together then you will have just the right Sale, just the right Buy and a very happy client who gets their dream fulfilled.  I wake up in the morning with Michelangelo's guide to Greatness embedded in my mind.

That's a great way of looking at it Larry, and I also like the old proverb "it's a poor craftsman who blames his tools". This is a business where agents have the opportunity to make the best of things with their own effort and merit.

@Edward and Celia thank you for your comment.  I look to greatness of every sort to find ways to apply that to our chosen careers.

@Malcolm I think complaining is a waste of time anyway; action and efforts will always bring results.  Results can be altered and should be altered to perfect the actions. Thanks for the comment.

@Debbie, there is real joy in doing our jobs well, I agree.

Larry, one of the many reasons I love working in real estate is the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of people who are in transition.  I am a glass 1/2 full person and love your comparison to one of the most gifted artists of all time, Michelangelo.
