                          Sacramento's Coca Cola Bottling Company

Coca Cola Bottling Company - Sacramento

One thing about having lived in the Greater Sacramento area all my life is that almost every street corner has some significance imprinted on my memory.  The corner of Stockton Boulevard and 37th Street, across from the U.C. Davis Medical Center is certainly no exception.

The Coca Cola Bottling Company, a community landmark, has crowned that corner since 1927.  Recent news the plant is slated to close is sad news for Sacramento!

The corner windows of the plant were always open to the street, allowing the bottling operation to be viewed, as the classic glass bottles traveled along the assembly line.

Coca Cola, I’m sorry to see you go!  But thank you so much for years of wonderful memories!

For those interested in more history about Sacramento’s Coca Cola Bottling Company, you can read the recent story presented by the Sacramento Business Journal at: “Sacramento Coca Cola Plant to Close.”

Hi Myrl, I would think there are a lot of treasures in that building that Coke collectors would love to get their hands on. Sad to hear they are closing this iconic building.

Hi Myrl, Yes it is sad when a business is closing after all those years but at least they are not going out of business but instead just shutting down an older location. Coca-Cola is my favorite soda.

William - The Coca Cola Bottling Company sits immediately across Stockton Boulevard from the U.C. Med Center and Shriner's Hospital for Children.  On that same side of the street are little coffee houses and cafes that have sprung up over the years, which cater to hospital staff and visitors.  I would suspect the bottling company would make a wonderful dining venue, if handled right, and its historical flavor left intact.  We'll need to wait and see!

Tom - It really has!  I grew up several blocks from this area, and it was a regular sight that I visited while navigating town.

Kristin - I'm more of a Pepsi gal than Coke. . .But, must admit I'm fond of the old hourglass shaped classic bottles with the Coca Cola insignia on them.

Good morning Myrl. Your story and picture are reflective of a special time and the description makes me sad too. I hope the building facade prevails.

Myrl, That is nice looking bottling plant, the ones here have a more industrial look to them!  It is sad to see long standing businesses shut down!

Myrl,

That would really be cool to see the bottling operation. ;( Boo that it is closing! Do you know who is buying it and what it will be, maybe they will keep the facade! I hope you have a great day!

I am so sorry to hear this.  Wonder Bread had recently closed here in Queens NY also.  It is always sad to see companies like these close after being open and successful for so many years.

It is sometimes sad to see closings in our communities.  Many older plant facilities can no longer meet the competitive demands of the current market.

This looks like a good opportunity for a commercial agent to find a re-use for the property.

Myrl,

It's hard to see these changes occur. Out with the old.... in with the??? There's something to be said about tradition and the lives that have been touched by the people who lived and work in a community to make it great. Greater Sacramento is one of the most famous cities in the United States. I hope that whatever changes occur will stand the test of time and that American people of all ages will get jobs they can be proud of for years to come.

I am sorry to see the plant closing.  That must have been nice being able to look into the windows and watch the bottling.
