I got tagged by the fabulous Diane Aurit (Hi, Diane!) to pick a “Hidden Gem” from the ranks of AR.  This was started by our lovely Melissa Grant (And Hello, Melissa!) to try to help draw attention to some of the lesser-known but deserving AR bloggers.

This is really, really hard.  Believe it or not, writing a Meme is easier!!  (Seriously!)  There are so many people that I admire and like here that it’s a VERY difficult thing to pick just one!  I have a list of about 100 that I’d like to just print and say, “Here, read these.”

But when I sat and let myself just go quiet for a second, there was really only one choice.

My “Hidden Gem in the Rain” is Lysa Napolitano.

Lysa Napolitano

Lysa is an amazing person, caring and knowledgeable and FUN.  The way she writes would be a good lesson to nearly everyone in AR – she writes about what has meaning for her.

She’s not trying to write about what she thinks you want to hear and hope it comes out OK.  She writes about what she loves, and in reading her blog I feel like I’ve been offered a chair and asked to stay a while.  She’s not fishing for business, she’s just communicating with people who share her interests.

This is an important thing for you to understand: Do not try to please everyone.  Just being who you are is a niche all it’s own.  Writing about topics that have meaning for you will connect you with people you’ll enjoy talking to and possibly even working with.  Your blog does not have a formula you have to obey – follow Lysa’s lead and write about what you love.

From Lysa I have learned all about Florida wildlife.  (Little One is using Lysa as a reference in a report at school this very afternoon, and is so impressed that I have a friend who knows all about whale watching!)  Her pictures are amazing.  Imagine the patience she must have!

Lysa speaks honestly about her past, exposing personal pains in the hopes of helping someone else.  She has a true volunteer’s heart, knowing that it’s enough to help even if you don’t see the results.  I believe that she has touched many hearts through her words.  She writes about riding, fundraisers, protecting children and her own experiences moving.  We know her pets, her favorite hangout and her Sweetie.  (Does Steve mind if I refer to him as Sweetie?

Lysa just does it RIGHT.

The pictures below are Lysa's and are used with her permission.  (I asked and she gave without even knowing why I wanted them, you see how sweet this girl is?)  Click the pictures to go to their corresponding posts.  The graphic is Lysa and me on the MV Sparrow, which is currently traveling from Danger Bay to visit actual Active Rain members in their towns.  This graphic is used with permission from Jack Boardman of the New Codgers.

And I suppose I'm supposed to tag two more people to write about their Hidden Gems.  I choose Brande Bradford and Harold Watts.   Go on, get to work!  :)

Lysa definitely shows her love for nature through her camera!  She is one lovely person and I believe she is hidden and needs to get out more!  BTW...where you been?  Don't stay hidden either Sarah!  I'll look forward to reading about the next two!

What a great post about  someone who sounds truly wonderful.  I don't think I have read any of her posts and can't wait to do so.  I feel like I already know her from your wonderful description!  Thanks for doing this with such enthusiasm!

Sarah: Your words: “Lysa just does it RIGHT.” are exactly right! She's certainly a favorite of mine—and richly deserves this recognition.

Hi, Diane!  Thanks for giving me a chance to rave about Lysa!  It took me a while to think of who I should write about, because there are so many wonderful bloggers here.  But Lysa was really a standout, she's a star.  Be prepared -- I think you've just made a new friend!

Hi, Lysa! - You are so easy to rave about!!  <Passing tissue>  It's all true!!  Thanks for letting me use your pictures.  The way you said yes without even knowing why I wanted them, that was pure "Lysa"!  You really are a gem, a treasure.

Hi, Sally!  I've been "out there" building up my outside blog and so on.  Not really trying to hide, but you know ... But I've missed you, Sis!!

Thanks for the insight on Lysa. I'm going to go back and read her blogs. It's good to know there are so many people I can follow as good examples here in the Rain

I have seen Lysa around for awhile, but I will admit that I haven't really read her blog very much.  I will check it out on your recommendation.  I also got tagged for the "Hidden Gem" challenge yesterday, so I guess I have my work cut out for me.

Hi Sarah, Where you been? I've missed you little one.

Lysa is just as wonderful in person as she is on here. I had the priviledge of meeting her this summer and she was great. Just an all around nice nice person. Very giving of herself. I want to grow up to be just like her.

Hi, Bryant - I've missed you calling me little one.  :)  I've been working on my own blog and doing lots of stuff, just haven't been in AR so much.  I might get to meet Lysa this summer, maybe!  We're planning on going to FL but don't have any set plans yet.  Going to take Tall One to see dolphins someplace!

Hi, Jason! You should read her stuff!  She's writes straight from the heart, every time.  :)  Good luck with yours!  It's hard trying to pick just one person!

Hey, Ed!  Mr. Rybczynski, is it OK to reveal you were runner up?  You know your stuff, you're a freakin' AWESOME writer and you have a lot of passion about your work.  You've got a lot to teach us all.  We should have done lists, "Here's Who I Read and Why."

Hi, Neal! You lucky man, you!  I hope to meet her, too!

Hi, Klarque!  If you're looking for a good example, Lysa's a must-read!  Follow her lead and just be yourself.

Hi, Jim!  OK.  :)

Hi, Monika!  (Don't know how I got on this "hi" kick, but it seems rude to stop now.)  I actually prefer Lysa's outside blog, but this was an "in the Rain" assignment.  (Still managed to sneak a link in there for it!)

Hi, Missy!  Or should I say @MissyCaulk Hey, there!  :)  Let's just agree that we're ALL diamonds, OK?  (But I feel more like a garnet, really.)

Hi, Ed!  And donuts?  ;)

hi, Suzanne!  Long time no see, I've missed you!  I'm glad to see Lysa already has such fans here, too!

Lysa is a sweetheart. Great choice for a gem. I will now go back and read the blogs to the photos and try to figure out where the whales came from?!? We don't see them on this side of Florida BUT we have a ski store.

Hi Sarah,

I have to agree with you Lysa is a sweet person. I have read some of her posts and thought to myself wow what a brave woman to post some of the posts she has, but also knowing that posting these experiences may help someone else realize that the jam they are in is possible to get out of.

I have to say I miss seeing your blogs on here. You are one of the first blogs I read and I really enjoyed them and your sweet personality. You and a few others are what have kept me here. We went through some changes in our plans last Oct. and I have to put my plans of home staging on hold for right now. So I thought I should leave the site but I thought of the friends and their blogs I would be missing and couldn't make myself do it. But you left......

Hi, Randy!  I could learn a lot from Lysa.  She takes care of people AND animals.

Hi, Allison!  That would be cool if she picked up a few more subscribers out of this!

Hi, Trace!  Ooooh, I haven't TOTALLY left.  At least, I keep getting dragged back for this or that.  ;)  Come visit me at the Scoop, or play with us on Twitter.  Are you in Flickr?  And don't leave AR if you don't want to.  You have as much right as anyone else to be here.  You DO.

Hey, Chris!  The whales follow Lysa around.  Seriously, they do.  They love her and just want to be near her.

Hi, Kathi!  I think having your heart show through in what you write is the most important part of blogging.  But if you asked around, you'd get a different answer from everyone.  (Good idea for a post there -- run with it!!)

Hi, Norma!  Her pictures are just gorgeous!  I haven't even been able to get a good shot of a cardinal and they're all over the place -- I can't imagine the patience she must have!

@MissyCaulk I do miss you.  :)

Hi, Ann!  Hey, Sis!  That's a powerful series, isn't it?  I hope I get to meet her in person!

Hi, Georgina!  How you doing?  Eh, I'm kind of here.  :)

Hi Sarah,

Thanks, Trace!  I've had the hair cut a couple weeks, but the picture is from this morning.

Twitter is just a place to chat, tell whatever you're doing, share cool links you find or learn stuff from the people you're "following".  You talk to each other in little bursts, 140 characters or less, and it's called a "tweet" when you talk.  You'll have to join and then ask to follow me (I'm wvagent) because my tweets are private.  (If you pick a weird name, make sure I know it's you so I add you!)  That just means you can't read my tweets unless I approve, for security.  If you see people with a little red lock at the end of their tweets, that means they're private -- but if you're seeing them you're already added.  :)  You'll be able to look at the people I follow and probably find some people you know.   Hope to see you there!

Donna - Her pictures are simply gorgeous -- on her outside blog she has video of robins and I was swept away.  Up here they don't flock, but she had a whole flock of them, and it was weird to see them this time of year.  I thought, "So THAT'S where they go!  They're visiting Lysa!"

Kris - Thank you!  I got it cut a couple weeks ago so it's kind of weird to have people mentioning it now, but I guess nobody online saw it until now, huh?  :)  Lysa is amazing, as are you, so I would expect you'd make wonderful friends!

Kathy - I got featured?!  :D!!  Lysa does have a good sense of humor, I bet she's loads of fun to work with.
