You may not realize it but Maryland is horse country! Not only does Maryland host one of the jewels of racing's Triple Crown, at Pimlico in Baltimore, but Maryland also has jousting as its state sport, and steeplechases as a great past time. The opening of the Maryland Steeplechasing season signifies the true start of spring to many Marylanders.
Thousands of city dwellers will head to the country and walk on grass for the first time since last fall! Party time ensues as spectators follow the colorful silks of the amateur jockeys leaping over wooden fences in three or four-mile races that are true tests of man and horse.
Steeplechase races over timber is a Maryland tradition that goes back some 100-plus years. Few sports can boast the tradition of family participation which characterize these races.
