Egg-Drop Tragedy

Egg-Drop Tragedy

Egg-Drop Tragedy

Tragedy at base of massive oak tree amongst the beauty of spring daffodils ended the life of a baby robin even before it began.  Between the rain, snow and wind I ventured out to see how my daffodils were surviving a late winter storm only to discover a robin's egg that had fallen out of the nest above.

Egg-Drop Tragedy

Of course I had to run inside to grab my camera.  Now I wonder what caused the egg to fall out of the nest.  Any ideas?

Mary: We have other birds or squirrels that will come and rob the nests. So sad.

Hi Mary, well it has been very windy here in Morgantown WV... So perhaps the wind did blow hard enough to rock the nest and out dropped the egg.

In the wake of all the news of today (i.e.) Boston Marathon Bombing, Texas Fertilizer Plant Disaster, China's Earthquake 4/20/2013,  -  this was a simple tragedy with its only story. Sad.

That is so sad. I have found a few baby birds that I have managed to nurse back to health. It is very rewarding.

Mary, Nature tends to take care of its own. I feel helpless when a young bird falls out of its nest and cannot get back.

Hella, we do, too. However, I wonder about the high winds we had last two days. Just sad.

Rebecca, that is my thought. The wind was so strong.

Jane, thanks for visiting today.

Dinah, kudos for nursing babies back to life. I have never found baby birds.

Wanda, that would be my thought, but I have never found baby animals alive. This egg had a dried yolk so obviously the egg had had fallen long before I found it.

Robins don't lay very many eggs at a time, so it must have just fallen from the nest. Or, maybe the robin said to Mr. Robin that she was not ready to be a mamma robin, and if he wasn't gonna stick around and help build the nest, she was leaving, and when got into a fight, she whopped him with her left wing right where it hurts, and then she kicked the egg out of the nest?

Love your scenario, Elizabeth. Bet birds are no different than people. It's all about getting along with each other. Have a good weekend.

Elizabeth's comment made me laugh.  I'm guessing it was a combination of a squirrel upsetting the nest enough so the wind took one of the eggs.

Chris Ann,  me too.  I am laughing again as I reread Elizabeth's comment. Yes, we have lots of squirrels around so they were probably the culprits.

Tony, love your commentary . . . just one of the hazards for being an egg.  LOL  You made my afternoon.

Me, too, Cheryl.  I have seen empty eggs but never one with dried yolk.   Hopefully the mother saved her other eggs.
