To Meddle or Not To Meddle, That is the Question - Part 1
Back in the spring, one of my buyers (let's call her Betty Buyer) was under contract to purchase a home in a nearby community. The seller (let's call her Sally Seller) had a boyfriend (let's call him Butinsky Boyfriend). Butinsky insisted on being in the house during showings and during the inspection.
Betty attended the inspection and Butinksy felt it was his obligation to "entertain" Betty. He shared information about himself and his business. Too much information.
Butinsky was a general contractor and he had done a lot of work in Sally's house. As a general contractor, he told Betty that he always hired undocumented, unlicensed workers because he didn't have to pay them well.
With this information openly out there, when it came time to negotiate repairs, Betty decided she preferred a reduction in price rather than letting Butinsky's unlicensed workers make repairs. Betty wanted to hire professionals to have the work done. Sally, of course, wanted Butinsky to do the repairs. When an agreement could not be reached, Betty terminated the contract. And the day after that, the listing agent canceled the listing in the MLS.
Did the boyfriend help or hinder the sale? Since the contract was terminated (within the option period), it seems that he hindered the sale. Meddling was not in his girlfriend's best interest.
But there's more to the story: To Meddle or Not To Meddle, That is the Question - Part 2 (Stay tuned until tomorrow for the next installment.)
