Bats feasting on Termites!  That is a new on one me.  From now on if I see bats attached to a building or home, I will consider termites.

BatsBats Feast on Termites. Last week at my office one of the office staff came to me and asked what she should do about some bats that were attached to the front face of our building. The bats were tagged and being monitored by the biology center at Austin Peay State University.

Although I didn’t see the bats myself  I asked some more questions. How many days had she seen the bats? What did they appear to be doing?

The bats were basically in the same spot on the outside brick facade where they had been for several days. They were very still and about 8 feet off the ground. I knew that bats like to eat insects so thought maybe they had found a hole in the mortar and were feeding on a little nest of insects. And that was exactly what they were doing.

Bats Feast on Termites. In fact the building had termites that had eaten their way up from the ground almost 8 feet into the wall and the bats were having a feast. The bats were giving warning signs of termites. With further investigation the termites had begun to eat through the drywall in the office wall on the other side of the brick wall.

If you have bats around your home watch their actions. They like to eat insects and especially winged insects. They could be helping to free your home of unwanted insects. Or they could be telling you that you have termites.

Wow, I learned something with this post, thanks Wayne.  I once had a bat inside my home, flying around the upstairs at 1am while I tried in vain to catch/net/etc., this thing to no avail. I finally went downstairs, opened the front door, turned on the light upstairs, and waited at the bottom of the stairs. Fairly quickly, it flew down the stairs, right in front of my face, into the foyer briefly, then out the door.  I couldn't catch it, but it quickly found it's way out.  No termites, but I don't know how this thing got in.  We have lots of bats in our neighborhood which is surrounded by a huge national park, and when I walk in the evenings in the summer, at dusk, I will see them flying overhead and they appear to be eating insects on the fly, and we have very few mosquito problems because of these lovely creatures, even if they do visually look scary.
