When you visit Charlottesville Virginia you are really missing out if you do not see the tour at Monticello.

They have several tours now (house, Gardens and Plantation) and the house tour is the most popular and my personal favorite.

When you are on the front porch at Monticello and you look out over Charlottesville you get a feel for the greatness of Jefferson.

You can see the University of Virginia from his grounds just as he did when it was being built.

The moment you enter you see several of his accomplishments and his inventions. I will not spoil the tour by giving away the details but you will be very surprised at all the things he did!

You know of course he sent Lewis and Clark out west from here...

On the Monticello website there is a great on-line room by room tour with Panorama photos of every room. It is the next best thing to actually visiting Monticello.

My wife loves the garden tour and it is ever changing with the seasons. What a great way to spend a day!

Come visit Charlottesville and do yourself and your family a favor and visit the fine home of Thomas Jefferson!

Hope to see you soon.

Charles, I did not know that Monticello was in your back yard! What was I thinking? I do want to do some touring of that area later this year. Thanks for the post!   8-}

Great post, thanks for sharing.  Maybe we could get our politicians to visit and learn how to be a responsible leader.

Charles - I have visited Monticello, UVA and the Charlottesville area and you are correct.  To walk the rooms and the grounds and see the beauty and the innovation is to begin to feel something of the greatness of the man.

The generation and the society that gave us the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were  remarkably educated and conscious of emerging political trends in Europe.  And Jefferson was clearly preeminent among the leadership.

Thanks for stirring the memories.

Charles, I've only been to Charlottesville once years ago for a wedding.  We did get to explore around UVA and drive around the beautiful countryside a bit, but missed out on visiting Monticello.  It's on my to-do list for sure for next time.  As is a lunch or dinner with Mr. & Mrs. McDonald.

CHRIS - I just heard (this morning on the radio) that Obama and Clinton are visiting Sunday and Monday.

TED - Well said and I hope that anyone visiting sees Jeffersons Home. As a resident I still try to go every year.

Monticello is such a neat place to visit.  I remember the alcoves in the house and the fence around the cemetary.  It is a wonderful way to spend the day!

I haven't been to Monticello since my first year in college (and only did so because my grandparents dragged me out there when they came to visit one weekend).  Not only do I want to visit during my next trip to C'ville, I recently met a guy down here whose mother is a tour guide for Monticello.  I can't wait!

Charles, it's been several years since I first visited Monticello.  I recently watched a movie about Thomas Jefferson and the unconfirmed buzz about his affair with Sally Hemmings.  I was so intrigued.  Because of this, I'd like to take a second trip.

Hi Charles, I have visited Monticello several years ago it is very beautiful and well worth the visit.  A family member of mine was living at the Ashram of Swami Satchidananda nearby there. It is also a very interesting place to visit.
