Live Long & ProsperLive Long & Prosper!

Come to Northern Virginia and you just may be greeted by that famous Vulcan blessing and hand salute.  The Northern Virginia area comprises Arlington County, Fairfax County, Loudoun and Prince William Counties, as well as the independent cities of Alexandria, Falls Church, Fairfax, and Manassas.

Today's Washington Post reported that "N. Virginia Trails State in Deaths, Report Shows"  The first paragraph of this article basically says it all:

"About 57,000 people die in Virginia every year. Statistically
speaking, they're less likely to die in Northern Virginia than
elsewhere in the state,
a new study shows."

The study examined different categories of deaths from accidents, homicides, and child deaths, to suicides.  While "the statewide suicide rate is 11.2 per 100,000 people; Fairfax's suicide rate was 8.4."  Similarly, suicides plummeted in 2006 from 27 to 11 in Arlington County.  Do you think there's any correlation with the fact that Arlington's housing market hasn't suffered as much as some of the other jurisdictions in Virginia?

Northern Virginia remains a safe place to live.  While the latest U.S. Census results peg Northern Virginia's population as 32% of the state's total, "Homicides in Northern Virginia were disproportionately low. Only Fairfax and Prince William counties had more than 10 homicides, both far below their population shares."

Besides living longer, Northern Virginia is a place to prosper.  Between excellent schools, proximity to the nation's capital in Washington D.C., phenomenal job growth, major universities, museums, arts & culture, you'll find yourself enjoying life in Northern Virginia.

Brian, Being a big Star Trek fan from way back I had to check your post out.  Your Northern Virginia statistic is a great statistic to have.

MARCHEL:  Thanks for your comment.  I'm a fan of the original series and The Next Generation.  Beyond those, I'm not too familiar with the more recent incarnations.

Brian, I would be a fan from the same era.  I loved the original series and I loved the movies that spun off of the original and The Next Generation.    I kind of liked the one that was at the space station but from there I didn't keep track.  I hear the series William Shatner in is good but he will always be Captain Kirk to me so hard to watch in anything else.

MARCHEL:  I don't watch Shatner's new series Boston Legal either.  He's permanently etched in my mind as Captain Kirk as well.  And as the Priceline guy.

I get what your saying. Just not sure that death is what folks are thinking about when looking at NoVa. It seems like a ad slot from the movie "Scrooge" (Bill Murray).

Live in Northern Virginia or YOU WILL DIE.

Brian, that's interesting, we don't have the population and traffic of NOVA but have a lot of fatalities involving one car on our back roads.
