Gardenia as White as Snow

Gardenia is from China in the family of coffee plants and is the national flower of Pakistan.

gardenia

The genus was named in honor of a florist/physician Dr. Alexander Garden of Charleston, S.C, who is responsible for its initial success as a house plant.

Gardenia blooming season is between April and August. The beautiful flower is white as snow, and is used for corsages and for its fragrance. Some ladies even put it in their hair. Gardenia has been noted as one of the best smelling flowers, and it is usually pollinated by insects

Gardenia Care

Original gardenias grew in swampy or low mucky areas; therefore they like naturally fertile acid soil and a large amount of water.

It is best to use your coffee grounds, oak tree leaves or pine tree needles for mulch cover, and acid fertilizers, also vinegar is used by some gardeners because of their acid loving nature.

Too much shade will attract sooty mold caused by whiteflies, one of the worst enemies. When it first starts, soapy water is helpful to remove the sooty mold.

Happy Wednesday!

Hi Kwee, I love the Gardenias and thanks for sharing the information on this acid loving plant. The more acid the soil, the darker the leaves.

Hi William, you are right, the more acid the soil, the darker the leaves. If lack of the acid the leaves will turn yellowish.

Kwee,

I love the Gardenia Plant. I have one growing near my entry way and I always enjoy when the flowers blooms. Although last year it didn't bloom, even though the plant had green leaves. I'm in hopes it gives me the joy of Gardenias this year.

I was surprised by the flowers history. I didn't know that. I always thought it was quite exotic because of his fragrant fresh odor. I love it!

Thanks Kwee!

Great flower picture. I can see from the leaves that it is related to the coffee plant. Thanks for the gardening lesson. I didn't know these flowers needed acid soil. Our soil is so alkaline.

Kwee, when I lived in New York, I had a roommate whose dad was a florist, and she introduced me to gardenias.  I didn't know anything about them except they were beautiful and smelled wonderful - until I read your post.

What a gorgeous blossom, Kwee!  And, it has given me a great idea!  I'm currently clearing out ivy on one side of my house.  And when the ground is cleared, I think I'll plant some Gardenias over there.
