The ALOHA TOWER is a historic landmark listed in both the state and national registers. It was the tallest building in Hawaii when it was built in 1926 at a cost of $190,000. The Aloha Tower Clock was installed in the tower in 1926 as well. Made with precise German movement by the E. Howard Clock Company of Boston, it is still weight driven and the pendulum keeps rhythmic time…tick tock, tick tock …and weighs an astounding 7 tons.
Back in the day, (not sure the exact dates but around the 50’s) my uncle took care of the Aloha Tower Clock and kept the time …on time. It has kept exceptional time throughout the decades with the exception of two dates. 1) In 1984 the weight fell and the clock was damaged and 2) In 1993 the clock was vandalized. (I can’t imagine why anyone would vandalize a historic landmark!)
The Aloha Tower Marketplace was built in 1994 by Aloha Tower Associates and the Aloha Tower continues to serve as the Harbor Master’s traffic control center for Honolulu Harbor.
One of my most memorable events is Our Adventure: The Star of Honolulu Sunset Dinner Cruise over 11 years ago. It was our anniversary present from my daughter and our (now) son in law. We went on the dinner cruise the day after we were married and they treated us like Royalty! The Star of Honolulu is docked on the Diamond Head side of the Aloha Tower Marketplace near Hooters.
It seems that Aloha Tower Marketplace is THE place for me to meet ActiveRainers too! Back in January of 2008 we had our FIRST Active Rain Gathering and as luck would have it, the CRS Sellebration was here in Hawaii and those who traveled to Honolulu and were members of ActiveRain joined in on the fun with us at Gordon Biersch.
Another recent meetup at the Aloha Tower Marketplace was with Debe Maxwell and I wrote the post Meeting a Long Time ActiveRain Member--The People Behind the Words.Debe Maxwell was just as I thought…and she definitely lived up to the “person behind the words” that I’d read since 2007!
My experience with Aloha Tower Marketplace has been nothing but pleasant. With an array of unique restaurants, novelty, Hawaiian wares, souvenirs, coffee and clothing shops, the Aloha Tower Marketplace on the Honolulu Harbor is also a romantic setting for dinner, cruises and cocktails with family, friends and ....ActiveRainers!
