Rise Above It...

By
Real Estate Agent with Novella Real Estate

Anyone looking around here lately can't help but notice a proliferation of the nasties going on.  For some reason this past week the aggravation level has gone from a little snow ball rolling down the hill into a huge avalanche. It's impeding our vision and suffocating our social network.

Why are we here?

I can only speak for my self, my objective is two fold;

      1. Network the network to learn, make friends and get to know worthy real estate brokers in other parts of the country
      2. Promote the interesting and finer points of my area (Denver Real Estate and Relocation ) to the consumer.
      3. How am I accomplishing my goals?  By blogging.  Sounds simple, yes?  Well as anyone who has blogged or tried to put an original thought together it's not all the easy.  First you have to come up with a topic, a reason to write.  Your inspiration should be born from your goals...if the topic doesn't fit your goals then keep searching for one until you find it.

Now some people may say their goals are to gain points.  That's a goal for sure, but there are better ways to go about getting points.  You can post a blog and get 200 points and zero comments.  You will be 200 points ahead.  You can post as many as allowed in a day and rack up even more points, but what does that really get you besides more points?

If your content is weak, it won't gain you the respect or readership of any group.  Your Mom might be proud to call you a blogger, but when all is said and done those are empty points.  When faced with making a choice between points or respect...go for respect.  The satisfaction will linger long after the thrill of points has faded.Originality quote by Alan Alda

Saying no to posting JUNK is the new trend.

If you craft your blog to elicit a dialogue by being persuasive and engaging, you will get comments, add value and develop a following.  Who knows you might even start a new trend. Better blogs net more points, socially and mathematically.

Step Outside

Blogging is occurring everywhere.  This weekend someone started the Faces of 2000 Bloggers.  Go outside of Active Rain and take a look, click on a few of the faces, check out their style and message.  Have they found "their voice?"  Well it's the voice that carries a message in blogging, the voice does  not come easy, (unless you are a trained writer).  The good news is the Voice can be developed with practice.  Perfection is not expected, effort is appreciated.

Most Importantly Be Original

Most of us have been told by our elders, "Be Yourself." Those words  hold true in the blogging word also.  Being yourself will attractive people to you that find you appealing for whatever reason.  The good news is, when you meet on the basis of originality you don't have to pretend to be someone you aren't.

Copying the work of another to put on your blog or website or anywhere for that matter is not a good fit.  Aside from the ethics of it, it's not you.

I issue a challenge to Active Rainers

Outside of Active Rain the the world of real estate blogging, we are looked upon as "lightweights."  We are not being taken seriously.  Why?  Well look around and you will see there is a definite lack of original voice here.  We have a lot of followers, lurkers and empty profiles, but we don't have is the respect of the blogging community. We are a social networking site.  Guess that's OK, but it saddens me.  I think we  have more potential.  There are leaders here that have the ability to influence, convince and persuade.

I challenge you to find your voice and use it in a matter to create something positive.  We have the ability to change things, make them better.  Instead of creating problems, let's find a way to solve them.

KK: I’m going to plagiarize myself here with part of a comment I made earlier this morning in reply to poignant comment to one of our posts, it seems to fit: “The ‘Rain community is going through growing pains with the rapid increase in membership. In a population this large it’s not unreasonable to expect there would be some friction between members, and some people who don’t play well with others! And too, just like email communication, posts or comments may be unintentionally harsh, unless worded very carefully. Folks read into them things that were not intended by the author.”

Oh, and while I’m at it, let me return the comma that Medford borrowed from your blog: “,” Medford is quite chagrined about his misconduct!

This post should have a “golden star” and should be required reading for the entire Active Rain community!

Bravo!  I know it has taken me some considerable amount of time to find my voice and if it weren't for people like you encouraging me I think it would have taken me so much longer to find it.  I am all for more quality and less garbage here....   It only adds to our credibility the more quality stuff that is found here!

Kristal - part of what you wrote above really bothers me, and seems to bother plenty of others as well.  Why are we thought of as lightweights in the 'outer blogging' world?  I just don't get that at all.  And if we are, why does that matter?  The written word here is so flat......these are questions asked in ernest, because I've read that before on a couple of other posts, yet I don't seem to really see why that is.

I really enjoy being part of AR, and I think the content here, for the most part, is great.  The last few days have been a bit trying with all the nasty and negative stuff going on, but I have to believe that, as in 'real life', it happens other places, too, unfortunately.

There are lots of terrific folks here, trying to learn about blogging, trying to hone their blogging skills, trying to get better and better......I like it here, I like all that I've learned here, I like Active Rain.  I've learned ALOT from you, and your points in your post above are perfect to help all of us continue to keep getting better at what we're doing.

Thanks for writing them!

I agree with a comment above in that I have learned sooo much in the last two months from the "lightweights" here at AR.  I also agree with you that we need to step into other blogospheres to gain inspiration I think.  And to remind us the blogging world is bigger than just RE.

Although someone can be considered a so called light weight in the "Active Rain World" your measurement of success is not determinded by the points, posts or quality of your blog.   I suspect some of the nastiest comments come from those who are porfessional bloggers and amatuer Realtors.  Read, Learn, Play Along and have fun.  Use this as your soap box, marketing tool, learing environ. whatever...but don't let uglyness keep you from playing.

Kristal - Thank you for this post. I completely agree - Rise above it. Yes. I just was commenting (outside of AR) about my Hierarchy of Blogging Needs ... It goes a little something like this:

  1. I post for me, first. If I want to write something I am going to write it.
  2. I post for the consumer, second. If I feel that that the consumer needs to read something, I write about it, if I want to write about it.
  3. I post for SEO, third. I try very ameturishly (new word) to post in a way that is SEO- friendly.
  4. I post for any blogging communities that I may belong to, last. If I have the time and inclination and there appears a need, I post for a community purpose. Sometimes the community purpose covers all of the previous 3 reasons - then I have killed 4 birds with one post. Yay for me.

I really like Active Rain and I also like the point system. It can be motivating, (among other things...) but it CANNOT be the only motivating factor, because if points are the only reason to post, then the posts become mundane and trivial... Id rather have quality over quantity. IMODA.

(update - Der... I just noticed that this is a post from over a month ago... but it is all still applicable, yes?)

Nice post and not a problem.  Can't stay in the box, heck I can't even find the box.  i would love to start seeing some good content again on AR.  maybe something original, maybe something we have not written about 20 times before.  Don't read much here anymore there isn't much to read.

(Sorry...contd)....The belief that anyone can rain on my parade because I have poor spelling, grammar or what they perceive as valued content is irrelevant.  You and I are at least 10 steps ahead of any other agent in our area.  Just the fact you are here, posting information and learning how to enrich the community of active rain or localism it the key.  Your bits of data will last and eventually lead consumers to you.   Which is of course why we are in business.

Lets go SELL SOMETHING

Jeez, I saw the title of this post show up on featured posts, and I thought the nasty stuff had started up all over again.  Whew, I was relieved to see it's post from the past!  But a good lesson to bring up again nonetheless.

Your posts, Kristal, always have an impact!

Thanks for helping AR participants focus on finding their proper blogging voice...purpose for blogging.

While some of the content is akin to that provided by aggregator sites offering canned industry based service information - most of the content is truly helpful to the community and consumers alike.

The more individuals can distinguish themselves within this forum, their profession and their local community - the more they will prosper.

Hopefully, I will continue to grow in my ability to offer valuable content to those who choose to read it.

I disagree about the points system...it provides structure and the enhances the spirit of competition.

Cream always rises to the top (which those of us in the ancient generation can remember seeing). There are some great bloggers here, with wonderful voices, and lots to share. I just concentrate on those.

maybe inactive accounts - non participant members will expire after 60-90 days of inactivity....which of course may take points away from people that got a member to sign up but never played in the rain...oh, dang, now I am seeing how everything ties to points.

I love Active Rain!  I hate the negative vibes.  I do know one thing - you wrote a great post as usual.  The points are nice, but the knowledge is priceless.  I signed on to Active Rain to learn how to blog and found that it's one of the best real estate tools (if we use it) that's been invented.  It would be a shame to have a few "bad onions" ruin a great pot of stew!!!

Great point...I do tend to write in rants and passion... and in stream of consciousness hence all the ellipsyses...

But... in all honesty... isn't the magical star what is supposed to really POP and say "These are the articles that AR is all about???"

The SEO aside, there is always going to be someone that will write ANYTHING... but those of us writing in our voices and writing things for the benefit of our communities, our states, our networking partners, and our respective industries, we should get possibly a different star system so that the original pieces get noticed!
