The Glide Of The Blue Heron

When I posted Pelican Bay Shenanigans ~ The Video, Carol Smith of Toledo came by with the comment and I quote "But the Great Blue Herons are so pretty to watch.  They operate in a stealth mode that the military should study."

How right she is! The grace of this bird in flight with a wing span of at least 6 feet is just a treat to watch. Little did Carol know I had been trying to catch my Heron friend on his final approach of his glide path to me on video. I finally had success!

I really wanted to get the whole thing, gliding over the homes, the golf course, the waterway, but I was in the wrong spot when I caught sight of him. I do know he (or she) watches from high up in a tree for me when he isn't waiting for me close by. When I'm spotted he just spreads those beautiful wings and soundlessly makes his way to where I am.

I'll keep trying, but until then, have a look.. and he even gets lunch!

WOW Lysa!  How cool is that?!  We have quite a few up here in the warmer months - mostly out in the nature preserves, but they are so magnificent to watch.

Looks like this one grabbed a good sized bluegill!  Those are good eating too!

Thanks for sharing.  These critters of yours are fascinating.

Lysa, I can't imagine how lucky you were to capture that on film, it's just amazing!  What a beautiful bird.

Carol, I love watching him glide in and I've been trying to get a good still shot of that but nothing I'm real happy with yet. Its awesome watching him fly over the golfers... I wonder what they are thinking as he goes over them! There are some big bluegil in that water.. and some bigger bass.. but we don't want to eat them..

Carol, Its just patience and keep my eyes open :). (and making sure I always have my camera) I even caught a 18 sec video of a otter recently.. :)

Sally, He really is beautiful isn't he? I've stepped outside in the mornings to find him waiting on our buildings roof or in tree just across the way for me. I think he actually knows my schedule!

Joan, Thanks! Wait til ya see the next video :)
