Things You Should Know
About Staten Island, New York
If you are considering moving to Staten Island, or are a local who is looking for some fun facts about the island, here are some things that you should know.
The borough of Staten Island has a reputation for being one of the greenest Boroughs based on its thousands of acres of not only federal, but city and state parklands, most of which is overseen by the Parks Dept.
Some of the most beautiful landmarks on Staten Island consist of:
Alice Austen House & Park, Arthur Von Briesen Park, Barrett Park, Blue Heron Park & Nature Center, Benjamin Soto Skate Park, Bloomingdale Park, Clove Lakes Park, Cedar Grove Beach, Corporal Allan F. Kivlehan Park, Conference House Park, Clay Pit Ponds State Park Preserve, Eibs Pond, Faber Park, Father Macris Park, Fort Wadsworth, Franklin Delano Roosevelt Boardwalk, Freshkills Park, Great Kills Park, Greenbelt, Independence Park, Lemon Creek Park & Finished Pier, Mount Loretto, Silver Lake Park, Snug Harbor, Seaside Wildlife Nature Park, Saw Mill Creek Marsh, South Shore Golf Course, Tappen Park, Westerleigh Park, Wolfe’s Pond Park, Willowbrook Park – The list goes on and on!
Although these locations seem effortlessly beautiful, preserving and maintaining these locations is no small task! There are countless groups specifically dedicated to sustaining the natural environment of these landmark locations all over the island. Some of the organizations that keep this effort going consist of;
Sweetbay Magnolia Bioreserve Conservatory,
Staten Island Museum
Serpentine Art & Nature Commons
Protectors of Pine Oak Woods
North Shore Waterfront Conservatory
Natural Resources Protective Association
& Friends of Blue Heron Park
These precious organizations are all that stands between the preservation of these milestone locations and destruction and demolition of areas such as these. These dedicated organizations invest their time and efforts to the enhancement and preservation of some of Staten Island’s most precious environmental resources. From studies of endangered native plants, to the preservation of beaches, parks, and natural areas, these groups joined efforts toward a greater good – protecting from over-development, cleaning up our environment, and maintaining beautiful pieces of land all over the island.
Walking down wooded trails in the Greenbelt, for example, has become a commonality for many islanders to share, engaging in recreational hobbies together, and giving islanders a better sense of community as well.
