Don't Worry Be Happy..Never Make Excuses....

By
Real Estate Agent with Aubrey and Associates Realty

I mentioned in the last post that the list was entering the part of the list of traits that happy people have which are difficult.  Happy people don't make excuses.  I have brought this up in other posts, but everyone makes mistakes, it is part of being human.  Happy people own their mistakes, they learn from them and they move on.  This is the way to improve your life and your abilities.

Making excuses is a sign of weakness.  It is something that is very easy to do.  The thing about making excuses is that once you do it, it becomes easier to continue doing it.  Conversely, it becomes more and more difficult to take responsibility for your actions.  It becomes a self perpetuating cycle.  One of the worst things about this cycle is that it stymies your personal growth, instead of fixing problems, you end up doing the same thing over and over again.  The worst part of this cycle is that eventually you become the only person who is fooled by your excuses.

Happy people are confident people.  This confidence comes from realizing that although they have weaknesses, they know that they can over come these weaknesses.  By owning your mistakes, realizing how to improve yourself you build your confidence.  This isn't to say that you won't repeat some mistakes, the key is to repeat your ownership of those weaknesses.  I don't know about anyone else, but I respect anyone who is honest with me and says, "I messed up, how can I fix it?"  I am willing to work with people like that!  I would even vote for someone who did that!

There really isn't a lot more to be said about not making excuses, other than to say if you want to really be happy, never make excuses!

I'll never forget a 4th grade teacher I had.  She always called our "excuses" explanations.  She said, "An explanation, doesn't become an excuse until I say so."

Tony & Darcy, one of my faults is that I have little tolerance for excuses.  My father never allowed me to make excuses when I was growing up...to his credit and my benefit it's made me who I am today.  If you screw up...and you will..."own it" as you say...fix it and move forward...no one likes a whiner!

Tony & Darcy-   I love this because it reminds me of a sign on my High School principal's desk  "I don't expect you to make good excuses; I just expect you to make good."

Tony, that is a good way of looking at it. It's better to take responsibility and own up to ones mistakes, after all we are human and we all make them. I'd rather work with someone who makes a wrong right than one who is finding all the reasons why it happened in the first place. Hope you'll have a happy weekend!

Tony & Darcy, it's so true. There are people who will always make excuses and they are putting themselves in a stagnant cycle.

This is great advice for everybody to read, not just Realtors.  Excuses are never good.  Just own your power and be happy.  Congrats on the well deserved feature!

Sometimes people hide their excuses as reasons or explanations.  Often the same thing.

Confidence comes from knowing you can overcome your weaknesses...

I REALLY like the way you characterized confidence...sometimes we are not so confident because we are afraid of making a mistake.

The shift (for me) is to accept the fact that I'll make mistakes and know that I have the willingess and ability to own them, fix them and learn from them.

Thanks for a really great article!

FACT:  Everyone makes mistakes.  Once that FACT is accepted and understood, folks can go forward and make changes needed to correct the mistake or exicute remedies.

Making excuses simply delays progress.
