Don't Worry Be Happy..Wake Up at the Same Time Every Morning...

I have mentioinned in some of the past blogs in this series that this is a part of the list of traits that Happy People share that for me at least there is a lot of room for improvement.  This series has been one of the more enjoyable series of blogs that I have written.  It has caused me to take an inventory of the things that I am doing as well as the things that if I were doing, my life would seem a lot easier.  I say seem because I haven't been doing them so I don't know.  What I do know is that as I have worked on speaking well of others and being absorbed in the present, things are going better.

This next trait to me makes sense.  It isn't something that I do, but it makes sense.  In life and especially in our business we tend to rush through things.  It seems like we are always rushing from one place to the next.  I would hope that I am on time, but find myself rushing to do so.  In the morning commute I am constantly amazed at how fast and crazily some people drive.  I am guilty of this on occasion, but I have found that if I leave a few minutes earlier than I think I have to, I arrive at my destination in a much better state of mind.  I am ready to do what it was that I am there to do.

I get the fact that life is busy.  In our industry the busier we are, the more money we should be making.  Being busy isn't a bad thing, adding stress of running late to being busy however usually is a bad thing.  I have heard friends and colleagues say that getting up at the same time every morning is too boring, they would rather sleep in on some days and get up early if they have to on others.  To this reply I wonder to myself, don't we depend on systems and routines in business?  Do we not plan our work to be as efficient as possible?  How is getting up at the same time every day not a part of a system?

When I was taking my real estate licensing classes, one subject was being taught by a very successful broker from Utah County.  He stressed that to be successful, we need to get up at the same time everyday.  He suggested that time should be 4 AM.  I don't know that I completely agree with him on the time, but I do agree on the practice.  I find that after a week or so of getting up to an alarm at a certain time, my body will wake up generally with in 10 or 15 minutes of the time on the alarm on it's own.  To me this says that our internal clocks are completely programmable.

I also find that if I know what time that I am getting up, it is much easier and less stressful to schedule my day.  I still will get up earlier than normal if there is a situation that requires me to do so.  I find myself getting in trouble when I want that extra hour or what ever number of minutes that the snooze button is set for.  I feel stressed, hurried, harried you name it.  Is it boring? Possibly, but I also believe that it is worth it.  I find that in reality, that extra time of sleep really didn't help me all that much after all.  I will admit, there are mornings which are way too close to the night before, but I find that my body does better if I just stay on the routine.  There are lazy afternoons when this occurs where a nap really is a treat.  Why did we fight so hard to not take those when we were children?  As an adult it is a treat to take a nap!

I have probably been rambling on and on, but the reality is we really do rely on systems to make us successful in business.  We don't we utilize a systme or routine when it comes to sleep?  Don't worry, be happy and wake up at the same time every morning!

Tony, for the most part I wake up at same time every day except when I really, really have to get up.  That is the day I feel like I could sleep forever.  Wonder why that is?

Great series.  I have read a few posts.  I agree to leaving a few minutes early for appointments as it eases the stress that traffic delays might cause.

Tony and Darcy - This is something that I know I should be doing too.  And getting in some exercising each day would be a good idea too.  Both things I need to work on.  Good luck to you!

Tony & Darcy, yes I'm not sure I agree with waking up at 4:00 am everyday is something I want to revisit, but I do agree getting up at the same time every day is a routine that works well for me.

I tend to be a creature of habit when it comes to wake up time!  I'm also an early riser.  The hard part for me, is that I'm an afternoon napper.  And, finding the time to always do that can sometimes be difficult!

It seems to me that I have 'bad' days when I sleep in. I just can't get going on those days.
