Real Property or REIT's, Which Vehicle Do You Prefer When Investing ?

The REIT's have faired well over the past six months with no losses encountered along the way.  The gains are distributed in widely varying scales.  How much have you earned or lost since November?  If you puschased almost any of these funds back on November 19th your profits were realized.  PIMCO Real Estate Return Strategy Fund (PRRSX) added the least positive return to the portfolio but I still consider it to be a STRONG BUY.  While MNREX, a Manning & Napier Real Estate Fund showed no profit as of yesterday it is also considered a BUY too,  Many of these are probably ready to be SOLD although there may still be some upside left in the short term.  Investing is so much more fun in hindsight don't you think?  The returns have faired better than most traditional equity gains of real property purchase & sales however there is always a risk involved in any investment.

Let's take a hypothetical look at how your $10,000 investment could have grown since November 19th, 2012.

Kevin,

It really depends on the quality.  When we were handling a paricular street in Beverly Hills, the majority of the buildings were part of a REIT, and we had the listing on the available space...based on what we knew then, it would have been a good investment as the management was excellent...A

Good point Alexandra, it will always depend on the quality of management whether a REIT or REAL property is the concern.

Great info Kevin, many REITs are looking for investments here now I hear...I prefer real property in truth.

Ginny, the tangible aspect is my preference too but I can't argue with the strength of these returns either.  I don't care to have money too far from my roots so adding REIT's into the equation makes sense.  This is about as much diversification as my portfolio can stand.

Interesting stuff and it looks like alphabet soup to me.  If I would have just known some of these major companies were "moving in" to my town I probably would have invested.  Woulda, coulda, shoulda, eh?
