Are Your Iron Hand Railings Safe For Hands to Use?

You may not have thought much about it but your iron hand railings may not be safe. There is an apartment complex in the Rancho Cordova area that has a problem with their stair hand Iron Railings need repair in Rancho Cordovarails, so they called me. I didn’t know what to expect but I knew that management was concerned with one of the stairways.

When I arrived, I walk over to the building and it was obvious what the problem was. It appeared that the railings had been repaired a few years back in an attempt to save the railings. A new iron plate had been welded to the top of the iron railings. It looks as though the welding was not a good bond, welding to a rusted surface is a temporary fix at best.

A few years after this repair, the railings are very dangerous. Imagine sliding your hand up this railing and having your finger get cut between the smooth top rail and the rusty, rigid metal below it. Certainly something that needs to be addressed before someone gets hurt.

I am recommending that the iron railings be completely removed and replaced at this apartment stairway. This would create a new, safe handrail for all to use without worry of injury.

Tom, that's pretty bad and should be apparent to anyone as to the danger. As said many times, " if you have the time to do it wrong, then you surely have the time to do it right". Good share.

All the result of poor maintenance from the beginning, no doubt.

The other day I saw a metal guardrail on a high deck, which I seldom see. But it was very weak and loose to boot. Not good!

Good morning Tom. It is amazing the quick temporary and sometimes stupid fixes that people sometimes attempt. Just do it right: once.

Penny wise, pound foolish. It looks like the haphazard repair was good enough for a while, but now it's time for a new rail.

Jay - I think many believe that since it is metal, it will last forever.

I grew up in an ornamental iron shop so this is particularly interesting to me. I see people looking to save a few dollars and it not only looks bad but doesn't last. You are at the top of your game Tom, nice post.

Thanks for the information! I didn't know that an older iron hand railing could be such a safety hazard. I have one coming down from my back door to my deck, and with the slightly rusted surface I think it's time I replace it. I would do a temporary fix, because it's less expensive, but since my wife and I are hoping to be in this home for quite some time it would probably be best if I just completely replaced it. http://www.weldproinc.com
