Gilead a multi-use property that is extremely versatile and breathtakingly beautiful in Unadilla, New York has to close and is now for sale. It is located in Unadilla, New York. On 70 acres in the beautiful Susquehanna valley of upstate, NY. It was operated as a residential Catholic Comunity for the past 28 years.
What began as a small part of the Charismatic Prayer group at St Francie Cabrini Church in Coram Long Island, evolved into an Intentional Eucharistic Community comprised of four families determined to live the Gospel in a deep and meaningful way. Their community was to be called Gilead. They chose: "Love one another as I have loved you" as their motto.
Their homes on Long Island sold immediately, a miracle in the 1980 real estate market. By pooling their resources they were able to move to a rural and affordable area in Unadilla, New York. They purchased a 70-acre farm with a three-bedroom house and a large barn. They put 4 mobile homes on the property so the families could maintain their individual families.
Two years after their arrival in Unadilla, they notified Bishop Howard Hubbard of their efforts and he personally came to meet them. He gave permission for them to reserve the Blessed Sacrament in a small chapel on the property, provided that they commit to "praying for the priests of his diocese" on a daily basis. They became the first group of lay people in the Albany Diocese to be so privileged.
As the community settled into their new lifestyle, they began to share their experience of communal living with others, soon offering workshops and retreats. They opened their prayer life and weekly Mass to the general public. Associate members began to join. One of the men went on to become an ordained Deacon.
What began as a small effort blossomed into a vigorous and vital contribution to the surrounding parish of Sacred Heart Church in Sidney and many of the other local churches as well. Eventually Gilead became a hub of activity as Reiki and other healing modalities were added to their monthly programs. This activity continued for over twenty years.
